I just think the media don’t know how to take Starmer. He’s not media savvy, makes mistakes - owns them, tries to get things right - admits when he doesn’t. Just a normal human. Not particular political or charismatic. Time will tell how history paints him. So far he just confuses people.

This, by @tombaldwin66.bsky.social, is magnificent. It’s also quite sad. Starmer is a very real, very normal man who cannot show the world that side of himself. His failures are rooted in his authenticity. It’s clear Starmer is a very different PM. I hope desperately he is a successful one.

All the noise around the Welfare Bill - government puts forward an idea - lots don’t like it so lobby their MP. MPs make it known it needs changing - government changes it (most likely). Isn’t this democracy in action in all its messiness but actually a sign it works?

This Welfare Bill stuff is Starmer’s Tuition Fees moment. Early in his premiership Blair introduced means tested tuition fees. Right up until the day the whips thought he’d lose the vote in Parliament. The government ended up winning. No idea if Starmer’s Bill will go the same way.

I sort of get this BUT if this falls taxes will have to be raised and then we’re into Labour raising taxes on working people to support those on benefits - it’s easy to find people who many feel shouldn’t be.
