he's right and he's right to say it

all i want is to one day own a modest sized home in a walkable neighborhood and raise money for shelter animals. wear an outfit i like, walk to the grocery store, buy some nectarines, feed cats, and live in peace. just don't understand why achieving this is so hard

it’s even more demoralizing when the history you’re repeating is history you were around for the first time

Female PhD students (in economics) benefit tremendously from having female faculty around. When female professors go on leave, it decreases third-year female PhD students’ likelihood of publishing & securing academic positions. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Justice Sotomayor's dissent in Skrmetti (which she's now reading from the bench) is deeply pained, accusing her colleagues of abandoning "transgender children and their families to political whims" and badly damaging "bedrock" principles of equal protection. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated last night, was the Speaker of the Minnesota House in the 2023-2024 session, when Democrats ran the state government. That means she had a leading role in shepherding the many landmark reforms that Dems adopted in that period—an important legacy. Brief 🧵.

Walz announces that Rep. Melissa Hortman is dead as a result of a "politically motivated assassination"

NYT: “How will Trump’s illegal military takeover of LA play for Democrats?” I’m just a political communication scholar standing in front of our paper of record asking for them to not strategy frame an authoritarian takeover. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/10/u...

It is 100% carrying water for the opposition to participate in this collective delusion that Dems for some reason need to answer for every teen who throws a rock rather than hold the Trump admin accountable for intentionally creating chaos and breaking the law to stoke violence. They are in charge.

Hell of a photo

Let’s be clear: ICE injured and detained the president of SEIU California for peacefully observing. ICE picked the wrong side. The wrong state. The wrong person. and the wrong union. David Huerta stood up. And now 750,000 SEIU workers are standing up behind him. seiuca.org/press-releas...

Dominican man thrown to the ground and arrested outside immigration courtroom just now, an activist, who is a US citizen was also taken away in the chaotic scene. A lawyer later tried to ask the remaining agents where the activist was taken. "you just arrested a US citizen which is illegal."

Utilizing my domain knowledge as someone who has published on the Voting Rights Act, this would be a very bad idea

The reason why this article is so bad is that the only argument it marshals against international students is a fallacy. There isn’t a fixed set of slots for people to compete for, given by nature. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/01/o...

A truly historic fumbling of the bag by Alabama if they end up back under pre-clearance because of this

Well, to the student who asked me yesterday if I thought we were on track for a recession this year, I would like to slightly amend my answer.

Please highlight this story. ICE stormed into the wrong house, trashed the place, and made women/girls stand outside in the rain in their underwear. ICE also stole phones, laptops, and cash savings from the family, who moved to OKC two weeks ago. kfor.com/news/local/w...

Quite the quote.

They are segregationist and this will be open season for discrimination. “the Attorney General shall initiate appropriate action to repeal or amend the implementing regulations for Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for all agencies to the extent they contemplate disparate-impact liability”

Anyone have an idea if Sinners is going to be in theaters in a month, or will I need to go watch it on my own the next couple weeks?

A colleague at Stanford’s business school used The Stanford Daily to argue—poorly—against DEI. The piece was riddled with historical errors and left one searching for fact, so I broke my public writing hiatus to respond. I hope you’ll read and share the piece. stanforddaily.com/2025/04/22/w...

I will be teaching my undergraduate students about the effect of racial and political violence in the South on voting behavior and economic outcomes in a half hour. I was unsure if I would dedicate a class to this topic before the semester started, but I think I made the correct call.
