Agreed, the brass neck of the Tories shrieking their displeasure in response. I had to switch off then. We remember what Truss & co did to trash the economy. Good to have the grownups back as you say.

Their should be a law that any column published by someone who praised the Truss budget should have to have a disclaimer at the bottom reminding readers of that.

California should secede. It would be one of the richest countries on the planet. They could take their proportionate share of US military and federal assets.

I think he will find that local government unions are very active. This is Doge level BS.

Look north, peak rail fares are being abolished later this year on the nationalised #ScotRail following a successful pilot brought in by the SNP and Greens when they were in coalition government.
comment in response to

Meanwhile #Scotland has quietly nationalised #ScotRail and has been doing interesting things with fares (partly a result of the former SNP coalition with the Greens to be fair) including getting rid of peak time fares to entice people out of their cars following a pilot which was very popular.

My (Scottish) family trip planned for US (Hawaii) next year has been shelved, we are going to visit our #Commonwealth cousin #Canada instead. Too risky to visit US & what seems to be an incipient dictatorship. His actions have economic consequences. We aren’t the only ones choosing to avoid either.

I can believe it, Reform Ltd and UKIP before them are a bunch of racist economic illiterates along with BJ, The Lettuce and the Reform loving crew in the Tory Party. Let’s show them all that we have moved on by embracing the #EUreset as a step in the right direction.

He needs to hire that old speechwriter pronto.

Yes whatever & whoever is behind it I agree it is undermining their future GE prospects. Well that and the policies they seem to be adopting to pander to RW & Reform voters, they need to stick to their core values.

I agree he is prob v busy with the global issues -USA, Ukraine, Russia, Gaza, EU reset etc-with the domestic stuff effectively delegated. Is some background person giving PM ill-thought out speeches and dreadful sound bites to recite to deliberately undermine his long term credibility as PM?

Yes intellectual property & output across all industrial sectors will be there for AI to plunder. Not sure how the UK Government can begin to think this is progress or will help our economy and our population to thrive.
comment in response to

Certainly seems to be the case. I This #AIBill will impact every sector, from #universities to #industry as well as the #arts. The rest of us need to start caring fast or frankly the future for all of us is looking very bleak indeed.

Correction,my mistype-the amendment *stopped* the AI co’s from breaking the law, but the UK Gov proposes allowing it. Madness.I am so worried about future generations of creatives & original thinkers across all sectors who won’t own rights to their work which will be exploited by AI oligarchies.

These are rare anomalies that the new legislation will hopefully get rid of but the article and the person I was responding to was under the impression abortion itself was illegal in the UK which it patently is not. I hope that all women will have full agency over their bodies.
comment in response to

Abortion is not criminal in the UK, the headline is misleading. We have had rights to abortion since the Abortion Act 1967 (up to 24 weeks with extensions permitted if maternal health at risk or foetal abnormalities). Gov is seeking to extend that right further if the pregnant woman so chooses.

They are both politicians, Carney wasn’t one. Cannot think of anyone we have in public service that could fit the bill…

True.We drive too much.Trains & buses are great if you live near them.Sadly just missed my 8pm bus last night when I got off train-next bus wasn’t until 9pm thanks to bank holiday timetable. Ended up spending £10 on a cab, 1.5 miles(rain!),train £10.05 return, 80 miles. Thanks #ScotRail over-50 card.

Coming from a whisky producing community, the USA is the largest single *country* importer of scotch (or was before DT’s import taxes- sorry tariffs) . France comes 2nd tho so I am sure they & others could help fill the gap. We export a massive 90% so trade deals are crucial.
comment in response to

To be honest I for one am glad if they have red lines in relation to a US Trade Deal. We shouldn’t accept their dodgy agri & food products. And we need to protect our own food security here, reliance on USA for anything is not a good thing as recent events have shown.

I think that is a correct assumption.
