With some particularly harsh words for Rutte: “Lastly, I cannot find the words to describe the communication chosen by the Secretary General. I feel I might speak for a significant part of Europeans — it's tasteless. … It reduces Europe to the state of a beggar”

I'd bet that if he wins Mamdani will disappoint many people on Bluesky exulting about his victory by governing New York in the pretty boring vaguely Centre Leftish style of European mayors with diaspora backgrounds like Sadiq Khan or Belit Onay

/END

My favourite Word is "always“. "We have always been …." "Britain always did …“ 😡 No you haven’t, no it didn’t, and unless you understand the nature of historical change, you are unable to judge how important (or irrelevant) any given moment in the present could turn put to be.

There are some valid points, but the conclusion is flawed. North Korea, a country with a population of 26 mln people and GDP size of Malta or Iceland, could build a nuclear weapon. Yet, the European Union (450 mln people) or several of its members: nah, it's too complex, can't do it. Are we serious?

What truly matters today is what lessons Europe chooses to draw from this. From my perspective, the lesson is both clear and long overdue: Europe must urgently develop a pan-European nuclear doctrine to ensure autonomous continental security: buff.ly/Rd3IdPn 3/3

What actually matters for Europe – and urgently – is this: (1) Rearmament on a continental scale, (2) sustained and decisive military support for Ukraine, and (3) the strategic emancipation from dependence on the US for defence and security. 3/3
