Today was Henry's last day of first grade! He's a mix of excited for summer and sad because he actually loves time at school with his friends and teachers. Here's a first and last day of school comparison for this silly whiz kid.

#Top5FirstViews for May: Breathless (1983) Breathless (1960) Baby It's You (1983) Frankenweenie (2012) Nowhere to Run (1989)

We are so back!

Today is Wyatt's last day of preschool! Here is a first day (top) and graduation celebration (bottom) comparison. The face he's making on the bottom is him imitating Edvard Munch's "The Scream," which he must've seen in a cartoon or something. We're so proud of this kid!

Very handsome looking set. Just hope it fits on my shelf and the discs are in hubs and not sleeves at the back of each of those books.

Hunting Grounds had its West Coast Premiere at @siffnews.bsky.social 2015 ten years ago today. The sold out crowd was great, as was sharing the spotlight with my awesome cast & crew.

More 4K Quatermass goodness directly from @hammerfilms.bsky.social. Pre-order starts May 30th! hammerfilms.com/products/qua...

10 years ago, Hunting Grounds played at @siffnews.bsky.social 2015. I attended the festival's opening night gala on 5/14/15 with my producer Brent Stiefel and my lovely wife.

Happy Mother's Day to the lady who's been managing chaos since 2017. The Portanova boys love you so much!

Sorry to "well actually" you, my dearly beloved Fango, but I have to tell you there IS a directory of all the remaining video stores in the world, kept up by yours truly + last updated in January. docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Hunting Grounds (under original title Valley of the Sasquatch) is featured in @scarecrowvideo.bsky.social's new SIFF WTF section. Rent it along with other favorites from @siffnews.bsky.social today!

Cool

You never know what you're going to find at @crypticonseattle.bsky.social, whether it's a goofy panelist or an out of print box set from @arrowvideo.bsky.social for just $60. I have 3 more panels today and more perusing to do at the vendor tables. Hope to see you there!

Just a couple kids getting married 15 years ago. Happy anniversary, Val!

#Top5FirstViews for April: Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008) Devil in a Blue Dress (1995) Mississippi Burning (1988) The Beach Bum (2019) Bully (2001)

I will be returning to @crypticonseattle.bsky.social this weekend for the first time in far too long. I'm speaking on the following panels Sat & Sun: Let's Talk Kaiju! - Sat 12 PM Double Features: The Return - Sat 1 PM The Importance of Physical Media and Best Releases of the Year - Sat 6 PM

Today is a big day for awesome physical media releases! Hammer continues to releases their back catalog on 4K UHD in extravagant limited editions with The Quatermass Xperiment, the start to my favorite Hammer franchise. While this edition may be bulky and expensive, I think this one is worth it.

First VHS (not taped off TV): Jurassic Park (1993) First LaserDisc: E.T. Signature Collection (2014) First DVD: The Mummy '99 Ultimate Edition (2001) First Blu: Vampire Circus Combo Pack (2011) First 4K: Terminator 2 Combo Pack (2018)

Happy Birthday, Dad. John Joseph Portanova Jr. 04/17/1954-12/07/2022

The boys did the Puyallup and then smothered Sidney with hugs once we got home.

Spent Spring Break in Suncadia with the fam. Also made a trip into Roslyn to see Minecraft, 11 years after shooting day one of Hunting Grounds in the small town.

I would like to suggest a Val Kilmer RIP double feature of REAL GENIUS and DEJA VU and you can pretend he plays the same character in both of them.

Wrote about #RealGenius back in 2021 as part of my 1,001 Great Films series for the Seattle Gay News. It arguably contains my favorite Val Kilmer performance. He’s going to be missed. While sadly not unexpected, this still breaks my heart. What a giant loss. #RIP moviefreak.com/1001-great-f...

Bong Joon Ho just used his Q&A before John Carpenter’s The Thing at the @AcademyMuseum to ask him to score his next next film — a horror flick — and Carpenter said yes! Magical evening at the movies!
