Oh we definitely encourage them to go all in on their interests and last Christmas half of their presents were Undertale themed. But having so few other kids know about it their school made it seem like it was some little unknown gem of a game and not some cultural powerhouse.

My kids are obsessed with undertale but they say only like 2 other kids in their classes like it, is it actually a big thing?? My husband keeps telling them not to expect other kids to know about some niche indie game, has he been wrong the whole time? No other parents we know have kids who are fans

Too many people assume that if their previous covid infection did not cause lasting problems they don't need to worry about covid in the future. But me and plenty of family members had serious, longterm issues from reinfections.

My oldest did not get long covid from her first covid infection in 2021, but she did get long covid from her second infection in summer 2024. We are nearing the 1 year mark and she's improved some but her symptoms still significantly impact her daily life.

I ended up with a lot of audiobooks about various ancient societies lately and going through them is unsettling. The stories of how they fell collapsed feel way too familiar.

Just saw someone post that if your bluesky feed is boring it's a skill issue because Bluesky puts you 100% in control of what you see. Follow packs make it extra easy to find interesting accounts. If someone thinks bluesky is boring it was a personal choice to only seek boring content.

I've seen firsthand how much someone can improve their behavior when enablers aren't around to pressure people into putting up with mistreatment just because the jerk is depressed and neurodivergent. They learn to improve their interpersonal relationships when they finally feel consequences.

I still have so much awesome stuff including very nice solid wood furniture from my year of apartment living at the end of college. People will leave so much stuff behind when they move.

It's at the top of my to-buy list, I was actually going to go get a copy this weekend. I hope a new publisher is found. This book has so much word-of-mouth hype.

Yeah one of my kids needed an appointment for autism-related anxiety and depression post-pandemic and we couldn't get anything quicker than 6 months. We called in September and got scheduled for the end of the following March. We had to pull her out of school because she couldn't function w/o meds.

I ran into this when seeking therapy for my oldest. Therapists would say their goal was to eliminate various behaviors and could not tell me why they were problems. Meanwhile, they were uninterested in helping her gain skills like brushing teeth or talking. We ended up no signing her up for anything

2/2 If you aren't a homeschool mom you wom't run into the trad families at your local public school. Mom may just take 3 kids to grocery shop. You'll never meet these moms as coworkers because they don't have jobs. A whole, massive ecosystem of large trad wife families exists under the radar.

It is absolutely rampant in religious communities. Catholic churches that used to have casual catholics are now filled with veil-wearing homeschool moms of 8+ kids. Duggar-style evangelical families are common in Baptist and non-denom churches. You don't see them because they keep to themselves. 1/2

My mom would watch dramas with the most explicit sex scenes and never cared whether I was in the room, whether I was 4 or 14.

Mine was labeled ADHD, OCD, SPD, Tourette's, PANDAS, and of course non-medical labels like awkward, weird, gifted, etc. After my kids started getting diagnosed with autism their teachers and doctors said it was obvious they got it from me. My previous diagnoses were just describing autism symptoms.

I never watched it either.

The Christian men I know openly say one of the reasons they want women's right to vote repealed is because women are more likely to vote for things like feeding children and providing medical care.

I run into the same thing about K-12 teachers. The same people who claim teacher pay isn't low because we "only work 9 months of the year!" refuse to believe teachers only get paid for those 9 months. No summer paychecks.

Years ago my autistic kids' speech therapy center nearly shut down after a glitch in medicaid payment systems delayed payouts for several months. 80% of clients of anything serving special needs kids are on medicaid, so any issues with medicaid are a crisis for them. The US is going to lose services

My local center for children and adults with intellectual disabilities says they are going to be absolutely devestated by medicaid cuts. They do everything from prek for autistic kids to residential homes for adults with Down Syndrome. It's a lifeline for hundreds of families. And it will shut down.

Thank you, I will definitely try this.

It's required where we are too but there's effectively no enforecement. Animal control doesn't go out searching for unvaxxed dogs. But if the dog bites anyone, it will be confiscated and put down without proof of rabies vaccine.

I wouldn't make it very long in a detention center either. Literally would rather just die before getting taken. Would be quicker and less painful.

Yeah. Unfortunately she's only willing to go to Catholic doctors practicing hormone-based healing through a specific natural family planning method (it's napro, for those unfortunate to have a trad cath background). Unsurprisingly it wasn't able to properly diagnose or treat her.

Such a different world back then. Thanks for sharing

My kids' school and husband's office will excuse absences and approve WFH for covid but not "just a cold." Having a positive test result is necessary for us to isolate. Covid also causes my autoimmune disease to flare so testing allows me to prepare ahead for weeks of mobility issues.

She insists vaccines cause cancer and miscarriages and when others suffer from them it's their own fault for being vaccinated. But when it happens to her it's because she's blessed by God to endure special sufferings as a way to bring her close to him and unite her suffering with his. Delusional.

I know an anti-vax woman like that. Says her family is extremely healthy because they refuse all vaccines, even the rabies shot for the dog. Her 8 miscarriages and daughter's cancer was simply God's will, not poor health. In her mind they're perfectly healthy, not dead and dying.

Same. I had a bad reaction to the first shot because I'm allergic to one of the ingredients. Doc said never get another so I have to rely on herd immunity and personal precautions.

So sorry you went through that. I had something similar with a massive post-c-section internal infection. My nurse told me my pain level couldn't be that bad if I acted fine even though after an 18 hour wait in the ER, all my surgery pain meds had worn off. Admitted for a week of IV antibiotics.

Everyone I knew sounding alarm bells was not only NOT overreacting, they were undereacting. Even they didn't think it would get this bad this fast. They expected stuff like unlawful deportations but not deporting them to die in a notorious El Salvadoran prison. Everything is worst case scenario.

It's definitely not over. A few months ago my parents' senior living apartment complex had a HUGE outbreak and it killed a ton of residents. Enough that the place was noticeably empty and quiet until new residents moved in. It spread lightning fast.
comment in response to post
It's been hard to get tested because doctors now won't run covid tests unless your area has a strong wave even if you have symptoms and exposure through known outbreaks in your neighborhood, kids'school, or workplace. Home tests are pricey but are the only way to know now. This is going to end badly

I saw a research paper that claims 1 in 3 protestant pastors are diagnosable narcisssists. Wasn't the best designed study but it's a sign people are starting to look more closely at the issue. Not long ago even secular people would hesistate to doubt or criticize a reverend.
