"When it comes to the infrastructure", she says, "that means that your quality of life isn't impacted, frankly, we haven't done that very well.” Read the full article for more! open.substack.com/pub/thestude...

Finally, she spoke to the view Britain has of growth, and how that needs to change. “The psychology is that it’s bad, because when we have generally grown, often we just made the traffic worse, we've made it more difficult to get your kids into school, and it takes longer to get to your GP.

She was most forthcoming about the companies the UK is losing after the spin-out phase, particularly to the US. She said that, “The thing I find most frustrating is not being able to hold on to all the companies that we've spun out and grown. They should be staying in Britain and growing here.”

Tracey also largely rejected criticism that investment is too focused on Southern universities, saying that, "Two of the top five universities in the world happen to be Oxford and Cambridge, and we've just been at it a bit longer. Therefore, you sweat the two assets you've got."

On the government's plans to invest in the 'Oxford and Cambridge Growth Corridor', Tracey was full of optimism. She stressed the change in tone form the last government: “The mood music seems very, very positive. It feels like it's got momentum, focus and backing in a way we've not had before.”

More than anything though, we live in an age of personalities! Evan David is a brilliant presenter with loyal followers who doubtless also consume much of his content on the BBC. Why put a stop to that over something as trivial as this?

I mean he was asked if he regretted them and his answer was “no”

I’ve got a huge amount of sympathy for Gary Lineker and his views but the BBC is for the whole country, that’s the whole point. The moment you lose that you start getting in trouble

I agree with almost all of this and think that in any conventional, sensical scenario it is. Right now though, those rules are pretty much out of the window and personal leverage with the president really does matter - doesn’t make it any less depressing but I think it’s worth covering

I generally agree with this line of thinking but the reality is that Trump, as a big backer of Brexit, does see us as separate from Europe. You can't expect the UK gov not to try and exploit that and/or the media to cover that angle

I mean I think at the same time we have to be able to recognise that he is all of those things but that the general consensus internationally is now that Covid-19 came from a lab

Understand that this stuff has to exist in some way but my word is it pretty grim to see written down

Madrid has always thrived off being Spain’s most international city and still does (I think?)

I’ve just moved back from Madrid and this is something that I heard more times than I can count, generally from people outside of Madrid. In all honesty, I didn’t really notice it at all in reality - easily as many people from Morocco, Romania, and elsewhere.

The number of sports that overestimate their draw to paid TV never ceases to amaze

Yeah I do get that but media wise, no court case is a guarantee to kill the story way way quicker

Given how long we’ve heard Harry insist that he is going to take this all the way because he is one of the very few who can afford to it does feel slightly disappointing as an outcome I think. Not that on an individual level you can really blame him…

I have to agree - presumably the aim should be to diagnose all those who need the help regardless of sector. That may involve some levelling out across private schools as well. In general, it's surely better to asses a finished paper than a non-finished one? Some lifting up may be required

I think the rotating model is interesting. Would be in favour of it meant 5 fewer races a year (although that obviously won’t be the case!)

Kind of crazy this comes in at 4. Presumably not based on commercial success because, as much as I love the others, feels like Myles Smith has a bit of a head start

Hard disagree here. If it means that Musk doesn’t go through with the biggest and most disruptive campaign investment in British political history then it’s pretty substantial. Certainly more so than some of the notifications they send!

The audacity to write this stuff on the premise of being a former Chancellor, having been there for 38 days, is quite remarkable

I’ve got to be honest, I’m really not sure that in today’s political environment another review is going to hold any water. It all sounds very sensible when you hear it explained but it doesn’t help help set a things are changing, politics can work, anti-populist narrative

Great piece and chat although I did spend at least the first 30 seconds when I turned the radio on assuming it was about Spurs!

I think the actual flight experience of BA is massively over-criticised but I have to say the website is routinely one of the most woeful customer experiences I can remember having
