I regret to inform you that Stephen Pinker is back on his bullshit

Steven Pinker has got to be pound for pound the worst public intellectual we have

Please read. We hoped that one of the many members of the Bluesky community from Gaza could be first to share this letter, but we were worried that their account would get taken down if they did. This letter is for @moderation.bsky.app, Bluesky leadership, and the wider community here. Thanks!

incredible lack of self-awareness from Pinker here

There’s the weaponization of open science y’all. Basically ripped from @cos.io’s website. The ROI for leaders speaking up is the highest it will be now, and only decline over time as these policies take shape and grow teeth.

Very upsetting to see. The gov't is weaponizing the reform movement as a way to strangle scientific progress on racism, climate, vaccines, crime, anything they don't like. A lot of folks warned about this exact possibility for years and the need to take it seriously and were treated like crackpots.

Business dudes have been suckered by “yo, this computer *thinks*” since the 1950s.

Hey @themacdonald.bsky.social do you get off by harassing Grandmas in war zones?

Seeing threads about Google Veo 3, and seriously puzzled about how people cannot see these videos are all extremely fake, stochastic patchwork. Everyone so "impressed" again, yet these systems still have no clue what ‘hands’ are.

>would kill the AI industry imagine thinking that this would be a bad thing.

i have been hesitant to participate in the “AI for Good” Summit, that takes place in Geneva annually. but this year, i have been given a keynote (not a panel or similar participation) so, i said yes. here’s the first draft of my talk

Telling people "so I asked chatgpt..." should be as embarrassing and shameful as telling them "so I slurped down a bowl full of steaming liquid human shit." The only proper reaction is disgust and revulsion.

Whatever hype you are reading now about powerful people will almost certainly turn out to be bullshit

AI agents don't read, but I do. And call me a radical, but I don't dream of a future where society replaces actual critical analysis of the tech industry with the tech industry's own AI products

A key quote from the article " @irisvanrooij.bsky.social sees tools like ChatGPT as disastrous for academic development. ‘Your own brain is turned off. The purpose of a university is to learn to think independently and critically.’ " 👏🏼🗣️

Apropos of six book talks in six days with @alexhanna.bsky.social some students helped me today to come up with names for the days of the week the second time around when you didn't get a weekend: Monsterday Twosday Againsday Furthersday Friedday

“Effective immediately, Signal for Windows will by default block the ability of Windows to screenshot the app.”

Several people have responded with "I use it all the time, it bullshits less nowadays if used correctly." Does it? Or has prolonged exposure to its flood of bullshit made *you* worse at perceiving the bullshit?

UPDATE: UnitedHealth deliberately changed patients to "do not resuscitate' so that they would be left to die in any medical emergency as they considered especially critically ill patients to be 'a waste of money' regardless of patient's desire to live.

“In her order Wednesday, U.S. Senior District Judge Anne Conway rejected some of the defendants’ free speech claims, saying she’s ‘not prepared’ to hold that the chatbots’ output constitutes speech ‘at this stage.’”

hi i'm ben your ai chatbot

I've felt for a while that a mainstream method, reverse engineering, in cognitive science & AI is incompatible w computationalism‼️ So I wrote "Modern Alchemy: Neurocognitive Reverse Engineering" w the wonderful Natalia S. & @irisvanrooij.bsky.social to elaborate: philsci-archive.pitt.edu/25289/ 1/n

sifting through submitted papers (bidding) for a top ml conference & struck by how many papers are on audits/evaluation. this type of work would have remained at the fringe a few years ago. i only looked at titles ofc, it doesn’t mean any of this work can contribute to any meaningful accountability

"90% of medieval English altars contained hidden stone phalluses" factoid actually just statistical error. Most medieval English altars were destroyed in 1552. Phalloi Georg, who lives in a cave and has an altar with over 100,000 stone phalluses, is an outlier and should not have been counted.

I simply do not tire of looking at this
