šŸ“ Ankara ATG Ended up 14 minutes late into the Turkish capital, but I had a blast regardless. Not to mention Ā£27 in the highest offering for over 4 hours on a high speed train is pretty hard to beat! I have more plans tomorrow, but for now time to rest and recover 🫔

The high speed line to Ankara only starts around 2 hrs after leaving Istanbul, but has still reduced what would normally be a 7+ hour journey to just over 4 hours thanks to the 250km/h top speed. Meanwhile the UK can’t even sort out a 30 minute high speed line that should have opened next year šŸ™ƒ

šŸ“ Istanbul Söğütlüçeşme Welcome to Turkey! šŸ‡¹šŸ‡· Having postponed the visit from last year, it’s time to check out the railways of this Eurasian country. First up, I’m taking the YHT high speed train to Ankara in a VIP compartment, formed of a Siemens Velaro TR set. Let’s go!

šŸ“ Flughafen Wien And that’s a wrap for Austria, but I’m not done yet - off to a new country for me, one which I’ve been wanting to visit for quite a while now. I did have time to enjoy one last Taurus symphony before heading off though… šŸŽ¼šŸ‡¦šŸ‡¹

Morgen! Seems one of the DB KISS sets has started doing a Wien Hbf-Wien Flughafen shuttle for ƖBB… not sure whether the unit was sold or simply hired to them? Anyhow I’m off to the airport too, except I’ll be on a Railjet 1 set…

šŸ“ Mürzzuschlag Wasn’t expecting to be out this late, but a combination of significant walking to/from the viaduct and ƖBB having a screwed up network meant I’m only catching the train back to Vienna now šŸ™ƒ Anyhow, EC 150 leads the way, running 40 minutes late 😬

Took the drone out on the Semmeringbahn this afternoon/evening to get a few drone shots - here a ČD Railjet can be seen on the final 1 hour stretch to Graz from Prague…

When in Austria… šŸŽ¼ šŸ“ Semmering

Funny looking Railjet this šŸ˜‚

šŸ“ Wien Hbf 1 minute late down from 15 when the train first left Prague. Not bad! I did enjoy my time on the Czech Railjet and would gladly use it again - a brilliant time aboard. I reckon it’s time to check in to the hotel…

šŸ“ Břeclav Finally time to leave Czechia… šŸ‡ØšŸ‡æ āž”ļø šŸ‡¦šŸ‡¹

Second time using the ČeskĆ© DrĆ”hy dining car and it certainly didn’t disappoint… šŸ˜‹

šŸ“ Praha hl.n Time to kick off another trip with a quick stop in Czechia - this morning I’m taking the Ceske Drahy Railjet down to Vienna, which is essentially a high capacity version of the ƖBB Railjet with less first class seating and supposedly a better dining car… šŸ¤”

As if it’s the end of the line for what was formerly the UK’s longest train journey! I remember thinking some 10 years or so ago ā€œI really need to do this somedayā€ and in July 2022 I finally achieved that. Farewell Aberzance 🫔

NEW VIDEO! Probably one of Europe’s best value international train services, I took Ouigo from Paris to Brussels for only €10! Link: youtube.com/watch?v=kwy0... m.youtube.com/watch?v=kwy0...

An Israeli government minister has vowed that ā€œGaza will be entirely destroyedā€ as a result of an Israeli military victory, and that its Palestinian population will ā€œleave in great numbers to third countriesā€ Thereā€˜s a word for that… what was it again? www.theguardian.com/world/2025/m...

šŸ“ London King’s Cross Ended up a couple of minutes late, but can’t really complain. And thus brings an end to another trip - a couple of weeks rest now before I head to new territories…

Having spent the last few days on Talgo high speed trains, I can confirm the Azuma is indeed worse riding than they are (excluding the Avril ofc) šŸ™ƒ

And back at Darlington for the final leg home - 801225 ā€œEleanorā€ leads the way for the final 2.5 hour journey…

So why did I take a small detour from heading back to London? You know, just to catch up with some old friends…

šŸ“ Bishop Auckland Took the 156 to the end of the Bishop Line as I had a bit of time to kill - now to hop back on for the main reason I detoured home…

šŸ“ Darlington Yes, the way home involved flying into Teeside Airport - as for getting home, I’m using one of the Interrail days I have which I’m allowed to use in my home country. Figured since I was in the area, I’d take this 156 to somewhere I’ve been dying to go for ages…

šŸ“ Malaga Maria Zambrano 11 mins late in the end, can’t really blame Renfe though given there have been infrastructure issues on the Madrid-Seville/Malaga HSLs most of the day. One last Civia unit to tonight’s hotel ahead of a VERY early morning flight, then time for one last trick up my sleeve…

Anyway, that’s enough time killed - I’m now taking Renfe’s Avant regional high speed S104 Pendolino unit to Malaga. Annoyingly the service gap for this service ranges from once an hour to one every few hours, as is the case for the 20:16 where the last train before this was the 15:39 šŸ™ƒ

It would seem I stumbled across a Spanish heritage train whilst waiting for my onward connection… looks pretty cool!

That’s my connection sorted, however it’s not going to be for another few hours. In to the city I go… 🫔

šŸ“ Sevilla Santa Justa An L moment for Renfe as my train pulls in almost an hour late. That’s 50% of my reservation cost recoverable too šŸ˜… Can’t really complain about the delay as I had no urgent connections to make here - that being said I do need to find my way over to Malaga now this is done…

šŸ“ Madrid Puerta de Atocha It’s all gone wrong it seems - absolute chaos boarding the Seville train which was running late for some reason. Sadly TGV-based stock isn’t the best for these situations… Anyway, I really wanted to try comfort on the S100, Spain’s original high speed train, let’s go! šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ø

šŸ“ Madrid ChamartĆn Perfectly on time - probably the first time I’ve used one of Renfe’s Talgos and not arrived late šŸ˜… Really enjoyed my ride on board this morning. Now time to make use of the 4 hour free transfer window onto a local Cercanias train to Atocha šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ø

The ride quality of the Talgo 350, whilst not perfect, isn’t actually as bad as some people say, definitely miles better than the newer Talgo Avril… so what went wrong?

Buenos dĆas šŸ‘‹ Off to Madrid this morning on another @talgo.com high speed train, this time the standard gauge Talgo 350 variant used under Renfe’s AVE brand. Time to kick back and relax for the next 2.5 hours… šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ø

šŸ“ Alicante Terminal That’s journey’s end after a pretty intense day - the constant stop-starts after the gauge change = 25 mins late, but still an enjoyable time on the Euromed. Just wish the final leg from Valencia to Alicante was faster! Time to switch off for a few days - see ya on Sunday šŸ‘‹

Talgo moment šŸ˜†

After Camp de Tarragona, the S130’s unique Talgo technology is utilised as it changes from standard to Iberian gauge whilst on the move… that is until halfway through the gauge change it decides to go kaput šŸ˜‚

šŸ“ Barcelona Sants 3 minutes late on this occasion - sure beats arriving in an hour late and watching my connection leave as I arrive! That being said, I’m not finished yet - next I’m taking the Renfe EuroMed down to Alicante this evening which is a run by a pair of S130 Talgo sets…

šŸ“ Perpignan A 10 min layover for a driver change and ID checks later, it’s now full speed to the Spanish border šŸ‡«šŸ‡· āž”ļø šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ø
