Back in Istanbul 7 mins late, but I had a great trip regardless. Whilst not perfect, Turkish high speed rail really impressed me! Also took the drone out to the Haydarpaşa terminal, which will be the future YHT hub for Istanbul. There’ll be more to say about that though in the upcoming videos 😉

📍 Selçeklyu YHT Not normally the end of the line, but engineering works meant this is the terminus of the YHT for a short period. I’m heading back to Istanbul now after an hour-ish wait, with Business coming in at c.£33 this time for almost 5 hours of travel. Not bad…

Today I’m taking two rides on TCDD’s other high speed train which is based on the CAF Cepia model commonly seen on Alvia and Avant services in Spain. First up is a ride from Ankara to Konya, with Business Class costing around £10 a day in advance. An absolute steal!

📍 Sivas Despite being delayed by 15 minutes at one point, the Velaro arrived 5 minutes early… guessing a lot of padding was put into the timetable, not that I’m complaining! A few hours here then it’s back to Ankara 🇹🇷

Another ride on the YHT this morning, this time in Business Class on Turkey’s newest high speed line (Ankara - Sivas). This journey used to be over 12 hours by conventional train, however high speed rail has now reduced the journey to 2 hrs 50 (3 hrs 20 this morning). Love to see it! 🇹🇷

📍 Ankara ATG Ended up 14 minutes late into the Turkish capital, but I had a blast regardless. Not to mention £27 in the highest offering for over 4 hours on a high speed train is pretty hard to beat! I have more plans tomorrow, but for now time to rest and recover 🫡

The high speed line to Ankara only starts around 2 hrs after leaving Istanbul, but has still reduced what would normally be a 7+ hour journey to just over 4 hours thanks to the 250km/h top speed. Meanwhile the UK can’t even sort out a 30 minute high speed line that should have opened next year 🙃

Anyway, that’s enough time killed - I’m now taking Renfe’s Avant regional high speed S104 Pendolino unit to Malaga. Annoyingly the service gap for this service ranges from once an hour to one every few hours, as is the case for the 20:16 where the last train before this was the 15:39 🙃

📍 Sevilla Santa Justa An L moment for Renfe as my train pulls in almost an hour late. That’s 50% of my reservation cost recoverable too 😅 Can’t really complain about the delay as I had no urgent connections to make here - that being said I do need to find my way over to Malaga now this is done…
