It seems pleasant. What is that like - thinking of government and 'pleasant' at the same time.

I think my onramp was the Robotech series and then straight into The Mote in God's Eye, which formed the basis of how I view women's role in soc KIDDING KIDDING OH MY GOD I AM KIDDING.
Actually years later it was pointed out how fucked up it was and EPIPHANY. Also Heinlein, wow.

For some, sure, but they gassed a crowd in California. That guy was conveniently carrying a 10 round drum grenade launcher full of CS for show? Naw. Intentionally.

Scalzi's take is really good, too, if you haven't read it.

Wait, is the fight in your blood about gatekeeping? Like "Heinlein juveniles are right there! We don't need more YA/YA SF!"
Because yeah that is dumb. Who TF says "please don't write more stuff for people to read."
I will enlist in this fight. I will also happily read and enjoy good YA.

I actually think there is a reason for all this.
They fully expect to use all this kit against resisting citizens, sooner or later. Sooner, if we count California's recent news.
This is intimidation. These images in the news are propaganda to show resisters what they are up against.

My mom would make split pea soup with these, and now I need some. It's like a comfort memory.
So in solidarity I am refusing to function as well, which is definitely not cover for me just being normal me.

No wait, let's hear him out.
Let's hear out the guy who resigned to avoid the worst details of his sexual harassment from receiving publicity, and who "moved into his daughter's apartment" in NYC just to run for mayor, and surely sleeps there every night and gets all his important mail there.

That actually sounds nice.

Also I notice you are a little unspecific about where you lie on this but -
They voted for Trump, they voted for mass deportation whether they knew this was what he wanted or knew about it at all. Their lack of knowledge is their fault. He campaigned on this. This is no bait and switch.
comment in response to

The only ones I really, really believe it about are the ones who didn't watch any news at all, practically, and didn't participate in social media at all, practically. Superbubbles.
The 'mass deportation now' message was pretty prominent in both.

Most Trump voters did not vote for what Trump openly campaigned on, and what was explicitly displayed on high quality signs brandished by attendees to his speeches and rallies.
Sure, Jan.

His pivot from the Balko of 15 years ago showed me that he truly is a smart and ethical man, able to see evidence and not cognitive dissonance it away.
And I liked him as a force for good before the pivot, just as a smart person exposing police/CJ rot. But now? Force for even more good.

This is Shadow, a Russian Blue (allegedly) holding down an empty shipping box and stopping it from floating away.
He did this for about a week til the box was moved. I'd be looking out the window above the box and he would poke his head up and startle me. MULTIPLE TIMES, THE LITTLE !@#$.

The South African white genocide is eerily similar to the American white genocide in feeling.
"Representation of white people in popular media has dropped from 99.7% to 99.47% and if that's not genocide I don't know what is." (- Tim Pool, probably)

The sudden explosion of left-handedness is the exact same thing. It wasn't that people were exposed to something that made them left-handed, it's that educators stopped hitting them with rulers, etc. The rate stabilized at around ~10-12% and has been fairly steady since.
