You just stand up for people who are more in danger than you. You just do it. It could be a self-interest thing, that you realize that someday you will be the one in danger. But it’s even more important to do it if that’s never true. You just do it because humans are worth standing up for.

This is true for me when biking even though many of the friends I run into are in cars — they roll down the window and shout to say hello! My guess is that when two friends are in separate cars they're often near each other but just can't tell.
