sometimes i wonder if the nineties really were that culturally rich or if i'm over romanticizing them and then i remember the greatest cinematic opening sequence of all time

kids today don’t even know how great the May 18, 1996 Billboard Modern Rock chart was

Sesame Street is officially UNION! Workers at Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit behind Sesame Street, have voted 55-19 to join @opeiulocal153.bsky.social Huge congrats to @sesameworkersunion.bsky.social! “We can officially say that today, May 15th, is brought to you by the letter U!”

Happy Educator Appreciation week, folks…

“I’d love to just play with actuary statistics all day. That would be so fun! I bet you don’t even feel like you're at work!”

Keeping kids alive is no longer in the best interest of the federal government....

This, from a woman in Oklahoma talking to her local news station, is better than the vast majority of political speeches you'll hear today.

The reason they make it so difficult to get out of student debt, out of medical debt, out of rent, out of your auto loan, out of your mortgage — is because the more you owe, the more of your income that goes to paying off debt, the more docile you are. Debt is a discipline.

News confirmed by Dirk himself, in very Dirk fashion:

A horrible story but god bless this woman so accurately reading the ICE goons for filth here

It's time for today's NYT CONNECTIONS WRONG ANSWERS!!!!!!!!!

In this week's "Excerpt from The Believer," a new poem by Ocean Vuong.

Wrote about The Sunset Tree, an album that means a great deal to me, turning 20:

Oh wow: Portland Oregon is NOT KIDDING #handsoff

We're living in terrible times & I'm scared every day.

People don't miss manufacturing jobs. They miss the effects of having 30+ percent union density. And we can build worker power again, with good policies, for the jobs most working class people actually have today rather than hoping mumbo jumbo will make it 1955 again.

[the clash voice] tariff? don’t like it

"Create a locale by using all the high-scoring letters in Scrabble. Make it hard to spell. Make it even harder to pronounce. Watch as pretentious, drunk people try to pronounce it at parties."

31 years ago today, this joke first aired on TV.

The College Board is a racket and Advanced Placement courses are scammy. If you're a millenial or older, you might have fond memories of an extra-stimulating AP US Lit course (or whatever)--but the AP curricula have *really changed* in recent years. Increasingly anti-book, anti-inquiry, anti-debate.

Everything is terrible. So I want it known while we still exist that I think the guitar tone on Nirvana's "Rape Me" is the best guitar sound ever. Thank you for your attention. #nirvana

FDR once bragged to a massive crowd at Madison Square Garden that the richest people in the nation hated him and “I welcome their hatred.” Just weeks later, he was re-elected with 61% of the vote in a 523-8 blowout in the Electoral College. Voters *like* politicians who make the right enemies.

The institutional Democratic Party is guided by an almost pathological level of conflict avoidance in almost every direction. “What can we do to make the least number of people mad?” is just a bankrupt way to operate.

There’s no reason to have a Democratic Party if it won’t go to the mat to save the Department of Education. It’s a fundamental belief that children in America deserve better futures. It’s tremendously simple. You cannot continue funding a government that would close this.

Thanks @pbs.org for this terrific piece on forgotten/unknown black punk musicians - long overdue

There are a lot of legitimate criticisms of classical education, but the best criticisms are themselves rooted in classical education and serve to improve and democratize it. Rejection of classical education, however ideologically well intentioned, is a demonstrably failed, reactionary stance

one thing i am genuinely convinced of (and my most conservative take) is that we need to bring classical education back

fuck yes

SESAME STREET WORKERS ARE UNIONIZING!!! ✊ This morning, workers at the nonprofit behind Sesame Street delivered their letter asking for voluntary recognition to management! Read all about it: www.opeiulocal153.org/news/employe...

In recent decades, social programs in the United States have been structured in ways that stymie and suppress solidarity, obscuring the fact of our fundamental interdependence by promoting individualism and competition instead of cooperation and reciprocity. @astra.bsky.social @lhh.bsky.social

Someone finally put it into words

"What “Sower” imagines, rather, is a future in which surviving the seemingly unsurvivable requires people to show some emotional dexterity, some ability to surrender whatever selfishness they’ve been harboring and see if they have something that someone else needs." www.newyorker.com/culture/essa...

"It’s getting hard out there for us blue-collar Nantucket lads when all the ships’ owners are catching the Abolitionist Mind Virus."

"Riddle me this: if this is a colorblind vessel, then why is the only whale Ahab cares about killing the white one? Did you think about that?"
