Yay, although no proper spur to Longbridge station seems a missed opportunity.

Not read the article, but I'm guessing they'll make an exception for air conditioning in cars?

That's from the digital and technology sector strategy. Main strategy here: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/685854... But I don't think it's going to be much better,

As the owner of a leasehold flat who owns no land, I would assume the freeholder would get charged? 😀 Maybe this would the way to finally get them to give up the freehold.

I just had a look and there's a 75 page Digital and Technologies Sector Plan as well. It's very wordy, although has this timeline at the back. assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/685862...

It looks familiar but I couldn't exactly place it, I'll look forward to hearing other peoples guesses.

But we need to be careful about how people will reliance on technology which is not fool-proof.

Illegal parking aside, the issue here isn't an autonomous driving issue. The human exiting the car should be checking it's safe to do so. The "safe exit" system suggests it is only a warning system. waymo.com/blog/2023/05...

I was trying to find the source(s) for this - I think this is the report referenced but doesn't mention any of the modelling. www.rsph.org.uk/static/1ca52...

The idea that it is over specified is crazy: just look at the stations: no link to HS1. Both Birmingham stations not served by local rail. And no mention of inflation. Construction inflation has been huge over this period. Delaying the project just makes it even more expensive in the long run.

There's very few places that have no internet access at all. All modern cars have eCall which requires some comms. Also I should have been clearer. Internet isn't the only option. We could issue cards or fobs to drivers once their insurance is confirmed.

Why?

Really interesting comparison to immigration policy - companies have to prove that people they are employing are acting legally but don't have to check that who they're working with pay their tax?

Government shouldn't never need to be involved - car manufacturers could have sorted this years ago: make it that you can only start a vehicle if you can login and prove you are insured.

It's unclear if this includes the high speed line or not

Should have said "political will" there

It's not an electricity price problem, it's a petrol / diesel price problem. It's basically the same as it was in 2012. Government could solve this by reintroducing the fuel duty escalator and make a clear commitment that using fossil fuels will continue to get more expensive.

A good government could get ahead of this with some good communications strategy but it's going to require a lot of political to do something that is likely to be unpopular (but also the right thing to do).

Indeed and modern (no-AV) cars collect a lot of data anyway. However, the motoring lobby is strong and they won't care that it's not any different data, it'll be argued on grounds of restricting freedom and government interference.

Question is this in the Prime, Kelvin or Mirror universe?

Actually a good (ISH) article on HS2 from the Guardian. I can been quite disappointed in the coverage so far. Although, I'm still waiting for someone to say sort it out, build it in full.

Indeed and it's made more complicated by the blurring of work / personal boundaries. Things like byd, WhatsApp used for team chats with expectation of paintball personal numbers.

I agree, it's the only way it'll work but that's politically challenging. There'll be huge complaints about big brother watching you.

Why can't they build supermarkets like they have in Europe which aren't car centric?
comment in response to post
I'm in transport but I find Innovate UK quite good at posting there, along with the Horizon Europe projects. I actually find easier to keep up with academic stuff here than Linkedin.

What are you looking to get out of it?

I'm working on EU funded projects (including UK partners) looking at acceptance of automated public transport. The regulation / policy questions are fascinating. Especially when you consider a driver has a wider role around safety and providing information.

Indeed and a lot of this will come down to how cheap the AV tech becomes, which then determines whether it is a public / shared resource or a private vehicle.

Which also assumes that people give up private ownership (which seems unlikely?) and that we don't have the situation where people just keep their vehicles circling around endlessly to avoid parking costs.
