I did... exactly because I miss the alt-weeklies. I don't care for generational stereotypes, but in this case, I guess I fit.

I know three other big head sculptures. Getting this bike tag is a good reason to call off work, right???

Unless there is a REALLY good reason to pick up The Hobbit again, I'll be happy to leave it on the shelf collecting dust.
But now that Thomas is done with the book, I guess we'll watch the three (THREE!?) movies of the book. I wonder if there are any female characters added.

Surely, The Hobbit must draw on the horrors of the Great War, socio-cultural and class norms of early 20th century Great Britain, and in that context I'm willing to bet that more could be gleaned from reading the book.

All that said... I did see passages that, as far as I know, became fantasy canon, became the basis for this or that D&D thing. I recognize the importance of The Hobbit. I would be interested in learning more about The Hobbit in its?

So much deus ex machina. Oh no, trouble! It's ok, 'cause Gandalf suddenly reappears. Oh no, trouble! It's ok 'cause the eagles reappear. Oh no, trouble! It's ok, the thrush shows up. Oh no, trouble! It's ok, Bilbo uses the ring in the same way yet again.

The songs. Maybe this is a British cultural thing from a century ago, but those songs... so tiresome

Each. Chapter. Ties. Things. Up. Neatly (mostly).
In this regard, I guess it's not too different from The Hunger Games, which I had recently read to Thomas. It just feels too... well... neat.

None of the dwarves, aside from Thorin, had any personality, and he was simply grumpy. Bombur was fat, but that's his only defining characteristic. The other dwarves couldn't be any less one-dimensional. No wonder I remember being confused by the different dwarves when I was a kid.

Gripes:
First, the low-hanging fruit. I believe there was only one named female character... who was an ancestor of Bilbo, and so clearly did not have any lines. There was mention of "women and children", but that was it. #Bechdel surely has some thoughts.

Granted, the book is about 90 years old, so style is rather different. I believe it was also written as what would have been YA fiction, so the sophistication level was probably going to be lower that way, too. I will also acknowledge how foundational a piece it was for the fantasy genre.

No matter who gets to the stop sign first, if drivers going the opposite directions start at the same time (due to cross traffic), right if way still applies. The person driving straight through proceeds before the driver taking a left.

I'm new enough, I don't know Asashoryu except by vague inkling of reputation. That Hoshoryu didn't win back to back yusho is immaterial to me, personally. The dignity with which he carries himself and the sumo he presents is good enough for me.

Not a bronze statue like the previous three, but I think this follows along fairly well. New neighborhood for #TwinCitiesBikeTag, too.

I don't know a thing about wrestling, think boxing is barbaric, MMA is worse. YouTube decided I needed to watch sumo, and I was hooked. It's not just fat guys bumping bellies. They're strong, and fast. 1500 years of cultural history and religious significance, too. It's fascinating.

It is so wild that the party of don't-tell-me-what-to-do and states rights just wants to tell everyone what to do.

Having been a nurse caring for the desperately ill in 2020, and caring for immunosuppressed patients now, I am outraged. The willful ignoring of established science is the height of recklessness and stupidity.

I've biked that road many times... but I'm working this weekend. No tags for me unless someone drops around the block from my house again.

I'm in the U.S. and am stuck watching highlights when NHK releases them, so am only on day 5. Any news on injury for Endo? I thought he was looking alright until he took a while getting up off the floor again. I was certain he had a concussion last basho, but never heard anything one way or another.
