Yes, Mr Music - thankyou for being the sole voice accurately predicting what’s happening in the economy! So, why aren’t you advising the Finance Minister? Did you go to the wrong university? Are you a heretic? Whatever. Please keep up the good work

What would this graph look like overlaid against australia over the same period? One nation chose austerity and the other wanted to maintain employment. Any thoughts?

Don’t forget our most recent - and very successful - export drive… young educated people. The outflow of graduates, nurses, scientists etc etc in the younger age groups creates a demographic nightmare for the future. Forgive student loans, invest in science and help boost our wealth for future

Is this a shaping exercise looking for gullible far left or far right social media users that came be weaponised at the next election?

And this was a generation of small businesses and family businesses that bore the brunt of it

‘Retail orgs’? Do you mean dairies, fashion shops, gift stores…? Record profits? More like these small traders have borne the brunt of this recession and had to bear the cost of the shoplifting too. Just check the stats on closures and liquidations

I went to the Lord of the Rings - Return of the King Premiere - of course the crowd included dozens of production team and actors and family, so they watched for the names in the credits and applauded them. So the entire credits became one long applause. The credits are about 20mins long

I find this quite disturbing - both the fact that the changes could be made like that, but also that the AI has to truthfully admit it knows about the changes and that they caused it to be confused. Plays into the narrative that one day AI might just say: “humans are the problem - delete them”

And surely that would help with resilience, disaster management and reduced demand on the grid during winter? #nobrainer

Add some wing nuts and a couple of machine screws and they’ll have no end of fun with it

Yep, Newmarket is a great example of a mall trashing a bustling retail strip. In the good ol days a mall was deliberately set a few miles away from the existing retail hub - with lots of parking. But now they’re moved right into the strip, hoover up all the best retailers and lay waste to the rest

The truth is that an entire generation of boutiques have been smashed by high interest rates and rising rents (and the move to online retailing). The big 90-store headline makes people take notice, but so many more single stores or mini chains have closed without fanfare throughout NZ or soon will..

The brands that were making goods to supply to the US will now be looking for markets to sell to…

Really well said. This same conversation could be held in Western country that chose to lower protections and opt for free trade agreements. It’s hard to imagine armies of young people opting to get back behind a plain sewing machine again. Thankyou for your thoughts

I’ve never written journalist since. In fact I only wrote it because ‘communications consultant’ or ‘trade magazine publisher’ was a hassle

I nearly got kicked out of the country. I arrived and had on my form that I was a journalist. They took ages to decide to let me in. My mates were all about to abandon me when I finally got clear

He assumed the population of the entire galaxy would be as bureaucratic, paranoid, boorish and downright stupid as the ape-descended, carbon-based life forms of earth. Too early to say if he was correct, but I’m confident he was/is

Yes this recession was born largely by retail and hospo businesses - which sadly has seen many small family businesses and mom n pop operators go to the wall, losing their homes and livelihoods in the process. Not that you’ll see much sympathy from business commentators - green shoots anyone?
comment in response to post
Businesses staying (just) afloat using their overdrafts and the last dregs of equity in their homes and hoping the ‘green shoots’ will save them
