It was cloudy during most of my recent hike on the Claremont Wilderness Trail, so I took pictures of the wildflowers instead. This is the fuel for wildfires once they dry out in the summer

America used to have nazis who could build big rockets that didn't blow up but instead took people to the Moon

After a lot of troubleshooting, the old 3D printer just would not operate again, so in a rare instance of thinking, “thank god I got the extended warranty” I turned it in for credit and got a Bambu A1 to replace it. It’s pretty spiffy

I grew up in the hobby culture and while I try to avoid cheap sentimentalism, the allure of the old stuff has a strong pull. I think it's mostly because the whole thing with computers and the internet feel like it's reached EOL, so it's nice to remember when things were exciting and dynamic

Oh wow, my first mobiles in the '90 were from DoCoMo. My last phone from them used their emoji set. DoCoMo's service was also my first cell hack. I learned by accident that if you disconnected the battery during a call, you didn't get charged for the minutes. I had lots of free minutes for awhile

RIP Peter David. I knew him from his TNG books. Wonderful writer. Clever, witty, and a great storyteller.

I was a crew chief on the current largest cargo plane in the AF’s inventory and it was also probably the world’s biggest pain in the ass. Hopefully this one will be kinder to its maintainers and do better than the 5 by managing an acceptable FMC rate

I laughed in episode 3 of this podcast when they got to WBCQ on 9330 kHz -- you can hear them in all their flat earth glory with any SW radio using any antenna. They transmit from Maine and I hear them loud and clear in SoCal without even extending the whip antenna on my cheapo $30 radio

Some pics of the battleship Missouri with the Canon Powershot A560

Looks like I forgot to include the picture of the actual Arizona Memorial itself. This was also taken by the Canon PowerShot A560 from the pier that the USS Missouri is moored

I've begun taking my old Canon PowerShot A560 with me to take pics, mostly because I've always liked the pictures it took in all their 7 megapixel glory. I'm going to post batches of Hawaii pics I took with it this morning (I've only cropped these, no other editing done) #canon #powershot

Approves

This dude was eyeballing me something fierce for what felt like five minutes and then he turned away right as I snapped the pic

Figured I’d check this ship out before Daffy Don calls it back into service to hunt pirates or whatever

It’s not your imagination — Google search has gotten worse and it’s on purpose

I literally just watched the latest @defunctland.bsky.social about Disney's robots a few days ago, and now see the tables have turned on old Walt himself. Seeing the same "ethical concerns" being raised when Disney made his Abe Lincoln animatronic is the icing on the cake

I bought baseball cards and comics in the ‘90s when I was young and stupid myself

Archers didn’t actually fire in volleys (that was an adaptation mostly unique to early firearms). The reason why is explained in meticulous detail here

This is probably the single most missed question among HAM licensees in the IE

Made an old timey movie of the Griffith Observatory.

Pretty dreary day, but went for a short hike anyway (next week it’ll be 90 degrees 🫠)

This is the stuff right here. Shoutout to DJ Lobot

This is pretty cool -- someone made an anime version of Heir to the Empire's opening. I like using Mace Windu in place of Joruus C-Boath for the crazy cloned Jedi

By the way, I've never related more to a scene in Star Wars than hearing Forest Whitaker's soliloquy about jet fuel. You get me around some JP-4 and I'll wax metaphorically about the danger, inhaling the fumes, and how much it defined my relationship to the world for most of my life

Saw Guerrera is that uncle your mom hates who you met a couple of times while growing up #Andor

Speaking of solar collectors, a slightly more successful version are these mirrors which focus sun light onto a central tube filled with liquid that heats up and cycles out to the power generation portion of the plant

Here’s that same solar collector up close. These plants never lived up to their promise and were a bit of a boondoggle. They’ve never achieved their promised power output and have spent years just trying to remain operable due to questionable design and constant maintenance issues

Do you dare harness the power of the time brick

Speaking of Andor, many believe it resonates with the present day, but the big difference is that their Republic fell to a mastermind and his amoral, yet competent, henchmen who had to fool everyone to take power. Ours fell to a gang of creeps, kooks, and weirdos led by a buffoon

Syril Karn is a dumb little creep but boy, can he can pull off a beret. #Andor #Swagger

This week on Andor, we find out where the French live

Warning Sign

I'm starting to get into radio-based methods of communication (both licensed and unlicensed), and while there are inherent limitations, this is an area untouched by the tech cartel so it's a dynamic environment with interesting homebrew experimentation and emerging ideas

I called the local VA clinic today to schedule my second Shingles shot and it appears they're using an outside contracting company now to answer calls, or perhaps augment the existing system Obviously not definitive of anything, but it's a data point for me and I think indicates reduced staffing
