So today, familiar American brands like DeWalt, Milwaukee, and Skil are part of multinational conglomerates that do most of their manufacturing overseas. Could we recreate the industrial systems to reshore that production? If we really tried, maybe. But it's unlikely to happen.

To be clear, that's not a knock on Lie-Nielsen! Their planes are exquisite. But that's the point of the article: at American wages we can support niche manufacturers like L-N, but it would be much harder to make drills and routers and table saws here at prices people would be willing to pay.
