Nice post but more helpful if FIRE rankings didn't judge campuses on such foggy mush as those that have "experienced a number of controversies" (gee, higher-profile institutions have more?), and then declares: "it is not surprising that American confidence in higher education is at a record low."

The guy being celebrated in that article is doing a lot, and thanks to him, but living in rural Vermont isn't nearly as planet-friendly as the image cultivators of that lifestyle would have you believe. It still requires a lot of carbon to get everything to and fro. That is essential to understand.

Respectfully disagree. Ending government subsidization of individual motor vehicles is a more fundamental metric. A world that's still dominated by individual motor vehicles, even if electric, will continue to cause a massive amount of needless destruction and cost.
