It tracks that the guy whose company created a billion-dollar game that only found success when it began ripping off more successful works and is now a rolling circus of regurgitated IPs would support plagiarism as a business model

When people mollify ancient slavery or excuse it by noting the greatness of Rome’s Empire as a result, what they are saying is that this brutality and inhumanity does not matter. That putting metal collars on humans (even after Constantine! *clutch pearls*) is, what? Justifiable? It just never is.

But it was possible to go on a first date and say "I voted for John McCain because I support tax cuts" without it being a massive red flag the way it is to admit to voting twice for an openly-racist game show host who is also and adjudicated rapist, convicted felon and insurrectionist

Which returns to the original point that it’s not that women are suddenly refusing to date conservatives, it’s that conservatives have become undateable. Hence why they want to push back against the autonomy of women

Back then, "conservative" meant "I honestly believe cutting taxes will benefit the economy" rather than "I want to send all my enemies to a foreign gulag, chain women to stoves and burn books written by anyone I find personally objectionable", which tends not to go down as well on first dates

I didn't wish to give the impression that the far-right strand of Anglophone society is somehow new (obviously it isn't). But it used to be the case that one could position oneself as a small-tax neo-liberal Republican moderate on social issues and still get invites to the cool parties

Ten years ago John McCain was still alive and the acceptable face of the Republican Party was Arnold Schwarzenegger. Low tax fiscal conservatism was a position people could have without been seen as gauche. Trump and MAGA are gauche by design

That's certainly one strategy for responding to the current UK HE crisis. An alternative strategy is the petition Newcastle staff have launched (below). 2/2

"We need more qualified working-class jobs so we can depress wages and break collective bargaining power, but also lol if we're going to be the ones providing the training for these skilled jobs"
