b) The people who are getting the most out of AI are the people who are approaching it like a tool, working out how it can help them perform existing tasks more efficiently.

(Oh, addendum to this, if AI *does* do what is claimed and *can* cause this, blue collar jobs die only a few years later as the actual robots come for those)

Also a lot of the “Big Four firm reduces hiring to use more AI” can better be couched in “Demand for Big Four consultancy services is reduced and thus they can safely claim pivot to AI to minimise impact on share prices”

Do you roll the dice when you might not be as ready but face absurdly incompetent leadership or do you wait around till you think you’re ready and face more competent leadership?

It just feels like at every stage big tech is inserting something to make human interaction less and less natural and easy. The algorithm and AI are by far the worst instantiations of this “hiding” the human behind arbitrary rankings or slop respectively

God, I despise algorithmic timelines

As expected, they blocked me after posting a debunked politico article. Anyway - about the UK’s deterrent: ukdefencejournal.org.uk/heres-how-br...

Well there’s 2 things - 1) continued survival of nato and 2) continued survival of Ukraine. I don’t really mind sycophancy if it keeps the US in the fight for 2), even if it’s just another week

Gotta say that I really like the it

4) The state having a genetic database of its citizens feels inevitable, given our sci-fi imagineering. But it doesn’t *have* to be, and saying no isn’t anti-progress, it’s asserting the right of the individual to privacy and self determination. Also the thought just massively gives me the ick.

All of the five eyes are tbf (as is most of Europe) - there are attempts to build operational independence but it will be more difficult for the likes of the UK who rely very heavily on US manufactured arms

Well, erm, that would be because that is false. We own, build and maintain the warheads in Aldermaston. We own the missiles but they ARE maintained in a shared pool with Americans and require maintenance roughly every 10 years. We maintain operational independence of the missiles.

Very much here to second (third?) Cain - I’ve sort of drifted away from ‘40K but always come back to read the latest Ciaphas Cain book

It’s flawed but beautiful and I cannot see me ever leaving again

To have a world war you need other countries to react by supporting the country that started the war, not to immediately start yelling into the closest mic "we had nothing to do with this we are against it stop now"

(Also these people hate women, obvs)

Filters can change everything about a face and figure in real time leading to almost “Jessica Rabbit” proportions which are just not how people look. Movie stars have an entourage to make them look as beautiful as physically possible but they’re still (somewhat) limited by the real world (2/2)

it will produce worse output, but I do think folks should be super clear here too: what he is talking about is explicitly creating a propaganda engine

Forcing me to do maths on a lovely Saturday afternoon 12 years after finishing with astrophysics should be a crime

I will do!

If these things did become commonplace, society needs to develop countermeasures. eg I don't see why I should consent to those glasses fixing/filming/identifying me but what kinds of action would be possible and reasonable?

So you hate waffles? 😉
