The American Problem in a nutshell. We have been fed “government bad” for so long that many can’t conceive that hiring gvt workers to fulfill a function is even feasible. So they hire expensive middlemen to carry out all gvt work. This is why US spends the most money and gets the worst results

This is exactly the effect of such “zero tolerance” thinking. In order to ensure that one person doesn’t get a service they may not be entitled to, a dozen people are caught up in the net and denied the service they are entitled to.

Obama would have had the same effect if he hadn’t inherited a financial clusterfuck and had to spend massively to bail out the country.

This is exactly what happens when the system is primarily designed not to help people but to prevent “ineligible” people from getting the benefits.

I owe my existence to the fact that my mother moved from Liverpool to work at the Carbis Bay Hotel, where she met my father, a St Ives native. Monday would have been her birthday. Thank you for this beautiful reminder

The right always says this but their compulsion to constantly reduce taxes contradicts the first rule of every business I’ve ever worked for: increase revenue!

If this was really the problem then it would happen every day at sunset. But, just like the big Texas freeze a couple of years ago, it’s the unreliable fossil fuel stations that are causing the problem

“For most of human history, around 1 in 2 newborns died before reaching the age of 15. By 1950, that figure had declined to around one-quarter globally. By 2020, it had fallen to 4%.”

US has turned into that member of the group who only wants to talk about themselves, orders the most expensive things on the menu and then wants to split the bill evenly.

Guess this is another reason to follow you. Quite apart from living in Bath for a good while many years ago, I spent several years hanging out at BAA Corsham before it was absorbed by BSU. Another one of those weird connections in life…

Sorry I’ve only been working at the bleeding edge (pun intended) of cardiac surgery for 42 years. I was also an investigator in the phase 2 trials for the use of bivalirudin in surgery. Respectfully, I don’t need to ask the internet for validation.

Maybe but invariably the different kinds have pretty specific applications. Cardiac surgery is almost completely reliant on heparin. Using anything else just adds unnecessary complications and, inevitably, risks.

I once sat next to a lady reading her bible while we were waiting to board a plane. She turned to a double-page spread where every verse was highlighted except for one. I had to take a peek. It was the one that tells us we should feed the hungry, house the homeless and take care of the sick

I’ve often thought that. With the basic idea that inflation is caused by too much cash in the economy and the recent revelation that the top 10% contribute 50% of consumer spending, perhaps taxes could have a greater effect than raising interest rates.
