it's sad to see the name go and I'm sure I'll keep calling it that for a while, but French cycling is dependent on the financial and more general support of these relatively new regional bodies. Without them, the French calendar would be decimated. Vive Occitanie!

The rebrand has probably saved the race in the long term. I don’t remember any fuss at all when, in a similar move, the GP Midi Libre came back as the Route d’Occitanie

Eurosport’s commentators do have a more international perspective but I prefer the French commentary. They’re more cutting in their analysis, entertaining and they now sometimes feature Audrey Cordon Ragot who’s a commentating revelation.

This was the long-term aim of Radio Cycling. We wanted to fill the gap that was left when R5 stopped its live coverage of the Tour. We spoke to a number of race organisers, including ASO and RCS, and there was considerable interest, but as that interest grew so did the cost of the broadcast rights
