“Rachel Reeves, please tax me more. “I’m a rich pensioner. I’ve had my time in the sun. “The state is crumbling. It’s time we gave back.” Read this anonymous Spending Review Tax Justice plea... @eastangliabylines.co.uk

Dear Labour: the public want more social housing, NOT a blank cheque for developers to build more luxury homes that only the richest can afford.

🚨🚨 Today's under-reported but quite significant #brexit news: UKG government will scrap border checks on fruit and veg imported from the #EuropeanUnion in an early move to ease trade ahead of its new SPS (sanitary and phytosanitary) deal with the EU. 🧵 www.gov.uk/government/n...

The UKG is not serious ⤵️. They really cannot go another way. They just prove day after day that words and dreams cannot replace hard-working. Don’t you think so, @profjacob.bsky.social ?

Going to keep saying it - the Farage effect is largely an illusion. Many, many more people loathe him than like him.

The Trump regime wishes everyone a “happy” Memorial Day and an unhinged anti democracy anti constitution rant first thing in the morning. Calls more than half the country “monsters”.

Morrisons says UK-EU deal will 'ease' price pressure www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

“Starmer's EU deal is a big break in the suffocating Brexit consensus that has held Britain back for a decade. For the first time a UK government is doing things to actually undo the damage of Brexit, rather than increase it. For that alone it should be welcomed” 👏 bylinetimes.com/2025/05/19/k...

Almost as if the US can't push others around.

UK’s 50 richest families hold more wealth than 50% of population, 34m people. 16m people live in poverty. Average real wage unchanged since 2008. Rich buy political parties and legislators; weaken democracy; pollute more. Must reduce inequalities, redistribute. Tax the rich.

This should sound every alarm bell we’ve got.🧵 KKR- Thames Water’s preferred buyer- agreed to fix a US town’s sewers in exchange for guaranteed revenue. Promised a 4-year bill freeze. Bills rose 28%. Sold after 6 years, pocketing 2.8x their investment. www.ft.com/content/c1b4...

Why Keir Starmer's Reform-lite strategy is leaving him marooned on his very own island of strangers bylinetimes.com/2025/05/16/k...

An excellent piece, much recommended

“You linked winter fuel payments eligibility to pension credit which we know is a flawed system. You’re sitting here saying we know there’s a flawed means test in pension credit so why the hell did you link winter fuel payments to a flawed means test?” @martinlewis.moneysavingexpert.com

Keir Starmer immitates Reform in his divisive speech. Accuses immigrants of causing “incalculable damage”, making the UK “an island of strangers”. Rightly faces backlash from unions, employers, MPs. Silence on class war, inequalities, profiteering, lack of public services, fuelling frustrations.

With UK universities struggling, it is not needed anymore to attract high quality talent. With Brexit, the UK has opted to be more insulated and poorer. There is no political will to change that.

Why would Labour want to mimic this nasty party? “The British public is more liberal and tolerant than you would believe from our politicians. Time for Keir Starmer to appeal to Britain’s best side” www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Is there a US/UK trade agreement? No document exists. Trump says he will cut tariffs on UK cars, steel/aluminium, plane parts, beef and agriculture products. That's it. Trump might change his mind tomorrow. Not a substitute for EU free trade No details provided. Nothing can be operationalised.

The story about Reform's successes in the elections overlooked the fact that the left actually did better than the right. So that'll be media bias again. Welcome to this week's Pecksniff's Diary from @pecksniffsdiary.bsky.social

🔥 Despite Reform’s surge, the overall swing in local elections in the East of England region was towards the broad left. Don’t let the media noise fool you. The right didn’t advance - it fragmented. Here’s how...

Soviet tower blocks. Black market eggs. Secret police. This isn’t fiction – it’s Romania’s not-so-distant past. And the ghosts of that past are still in power today. Maria Szin reports.

Greens on ~10% nationally might be more of a problem than Lib Dems on ~15% if the latter can be squeezed but the former can't

🚨More than 40(!) EU & UK businesses, trade bodies & stakeholders are calling for formal negotiations to link the EU and UK Emissions Trading Systems. The EU and UK share the same goal: net zero by 2050. Linking the two carbon pricing systems just makes sense. 👏
