Silver lining: you can still avoid getting fucked by not putting your money into crypto.

Is a “mini-tank” like one of those cute Shriners cars but with a cannon?

I foresee a tersely-worded and overtly threatening Tweet from Gov. Abbott or Dan Patrick (or perhaps both) within 24 hours.

im not saying "all christians are bad" im saying disavowal is cowardly when people are actively using jesus as a sledgehammer to crush other people, and if your primary interest is in defending jesus' brand, i question your priorities

Dad took me to see Porky's and Police Academy. Way better than that double feature of Manhattan and Annie Hall to my young brain. Cool dad > Artsy dad

The US is not going to return to its places as of 2024 in any of our lifetimes and may never, but if it is to be any kind of contributor to the world and place of comfort for its people we need a new generation of leadership to jump in with curiosity and determination to build a new foundation.

What's left is still a castle, but one of walls alone, devoid of knowledge, humanity, creativity, knowledge, art, or comfort. It's still shelter, serving (mostly) our physiological needs at the bottom of Maslowe's hierarchy but just barely - and anything else is pretty much gone.

Until donnie and his goon squad, a bunch of incurious, hubristic, immature bullies got the keys to the castle and immediately started wrecking everything without any care for how or why any of it had been built.

From natural disasters, to disease. From soft power to science - the United States of 2024 wasn't perfect but the machine of its civil service was a marvel. A complex set of human systems, combining to not just maintain the US as a world power but to improve humanity.

It's one thing to lack the organizational competence to put on a grand military parade, but it's another to lose a hundred years of human skill, memory, and experience in combating the realities of the 21st Century.

And that's where this is a preview of where we are headed as a nation. Our military has no inbuilt muscle memory or competence in parades so, despite having great people, this was a disappointment for donnie. That's where our civil service is headed. And quickly.

Instead we got donnie's disappointing birthday parade™ - slapped together with whomever we could get not even bothering to pay attention to details like what music is playing ("Fortunate Son" was an inspired choice).

His staff are either incompetent themselves or cowed into subservience to the point of just trying to figure out how to get the boss "something" so he'll leave them alone. A true staff would have explained the constraints and realities and offered either less scale now or more in the future.

DJT has no grasp of the logistics of setting something like this up, much less the need for a foundation of competency or time to plan and prepare. No, this was Trump seeing a parade in China and saying "give me that".

Entirely predictable outcome from a "leader" who has never bothered themselves with details and a history of getting their way by shouting, bullying, or spending money until something happens.

Appletons parade today was mostly rather charming, btw.

It's fun but there's a huge difference - the original was in chronological order and this is just a pastiche.

…the Marines or NG cannot [Legally] act with civilians unless the Insurrection Act is invoked. Cold comfort when we're dealing with "POTUS 37 felony convictions".
