I’m exactly like this too, and often I’m too nervous to ask if I can join a conversation/enter a room/etc. so I just stand or sit awkwardly in the distance

I guess you have a point!! I will say, I’m also very poor but do have some of those things (computer, etc.) because I’m very bad/impulsive with the little money I do have from disability benefits

This lasted for several hours until I had a full-on breakdown where I had to keep my back to the wall so nobody could sneak up behind to replace me

Apologies for writing so much btw, I just found your point genuinely really powerful. It’s something I’ve struggled to describe for a while, but you described it so well

…and that is where the agony of trans childhood arises. So, I think actually - although I’m obviously coming at it from a different angle - you are absolutely right to say “of course I was born this way, who else could I have been born as? Of course I chose this, who else could have chose this?”

I suppose I ultimately think of transness as akin to Sartre’s take on freedom - “we cannot not be free”, or in other words, we will always be free. I think that, although birth has no relation to it, the chance of incongruence in a person towards their ‘birth sex’ is something which is irrevocable…

Likewise, cis people choose their genders — merely in a much less agonising fashion. They accept the congruency with the body that the contingencies of living brought them, and get on with their day, unable to recognise what they just achieved.

They do or do not answer the call - that’s the choice. But *being* trans is bound up in all of those rituals and thoughts and incongruencies which populate a whole life, long before the first dose of HRT.

…along the way. It is, rather, the culmination of a lifetime’s pressures, rituals and thought-dreams which lead to a pivotal moment: the choice to transition, to heed the call, or to hold off. To refuse transition does not mean someone isn’t trans; it merely means they cannot answer the call.

…that sex is decided precisely by the individual who finds it as congruent or incongruent with their experience of the world, and the position afforded to them. And if it is incongruent is not a result of some innate quality at birth, but neither is it because of an arbitrary choice somewhere…

I 100% agree with you, tbh. I’ve written about this a bit in one of my personal essays, but my position tends to be somewhat syncretic between “born this way” and “chose this path”. Admittedly, I believe that the circumstances of birth do not determine sex, but rather…
