Oakwell Hall is an Elizabethan Manor house in Birstall, West Yorkshire. The house was built circa 1583 and incorporates a mid 15 century timber framed house. The hall is featured in Charlotte Bronte's novel "Shirley" as "Fieldhead".

Built on a 12C ringwork, the 13C Kendal castle, Cumbria (Westmorland 😉) rises high above the town. The castles most famous occupants were the Parr family, though the castle is believed to be disused by the time of Catherine's birth. #Medieval #Castle

Tucked away on the north east corner of the Harewood estate, West Yorkshire, UK and now hidden in thick woodland is the 14C Harewood castle. It would have provided comfortably living for Sir William de Aldeburgh who was given a licence to crenellate in 1366. #Medieval #Archaeology

Built between 1150 and 1170 the Norman Church of Saint John the Baptist in Adel, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England is described by Pevsner as "one of the best and most complete Norman churches in Yorkshire”. It is notable for it's fine Southern doorway and carved heads around the roof & Chancel arch.

Stott Park bobbin mill, Newby Bridge, South Cumbria, UK is the only working bobbin mill in #Cumbria. Built in the early 19th century it produced millions of bobbins for the cotton trade. Here it is seen nestled in the woodlands that provided the raw material. Now a museum. #Industrial #Archaeology

The Augustinian Priory of circa 1189 of Cartmel, South Cumbria, with it's distinctive bell tower offset by 45 degrees lies at the centre of Cartmel village. The #Medieval gatehouse into the original monastic precinct lies at the north side of the village square (Upper left of centre).

Levens Hall, Kent valley, Kendal, Cumbria is an Elizabethan mansion built around a 13th-century pele tower. It has a stunning world-famous Topiary Gardens, laid out around 1694. Well worth a visit.

Hexham Abbey, #Northumberland, is probably our favourite abbey. Built on St. Wilfrid's Saxon crypt, itself built with Roman stones, the abbey walls are lined with #Roman and #Medieval stonework, including one of the largest Roman gravestones I've seen. Cafe home to the world's finest scones.

Lordenshaw Multivalate #IronAge #hillfort, Rothbury, Northumberland, UK. In addition to the hillfort, an additional earthwork can be seen coming up the hill and curling round the fort. This may be an additional (incomplete) defensive bank and ditch. #HillfortsWednesday #LiDAR #Archaeology

Aydon Castle, Corbridge, Northumberland is one of the finest, and most complete, 13th century defended manor houses in the country. Although attacked a number of times by the Scots in the 14th century it survived and was occupied until the 1960s. #Medieval #Archaeology

The east gate of #Birdoswald #Roman fort, Hadrian's wall for #RomanSiteSaturday. Nearest we got on our midweek break as EVERY SINGLE English Heritage site was shut ☹️ unlike the welcoming and fantastic VindolandaTrust 😁👍

Chuffing cold at #Vindolanda #Roman fort, Bardon Mill, Northumberland today. 🥶🥶🥶 #RomanFortThursday #HadriansWall World Heritage Site.

To the right of the Norman tower is part of the #AngloSaxon #monastery of St. Paul, #Jarrow, South Tyneside. In the 7th century it was one of the most influential centres of learning & linked to the Venerable Bede, who died here AD735 Walls are from the later #medieval monastery

The semi ruinous remains of the Augustinian priory at Lanercost, Brampton, #Cumbria has been attacked (inc. by William Wallace ) and rebuilt a number of times since being built in the 11/12 centuries. Henry viii providing the final death knell. #medieval #MedievalMonday

St Lawrence's Church is in the village of #Morland, #Cumbria, England and is the only church in the county with a substantial Anglo Saxon / Early #Medieval tower. The pre conquest tower has no external doors and only the characteristic small windows. The height was raised in 1588.

The remains of the tiny 8/9 century chapel of St. Patrick, Heysham, Lancashire, lies on a small rocky headland and is accompanied by a group of rock cut tombs and square holes for crosses. #Morecambe in the background. #Medieval #Church

Keswick, #Cumbria today with stunning weather. Well it would have been rude not to bother these stones today. #StoneBothering #Castlerigg #Neolithic #StoneCircle #Archaeology

Ingleborough hillfort at Sunrise 🤓🔭🌄 I wonder what the Ancients thought of views like this. North Yorkshire, UK. #HillfortsWednesday

Gamelands #StoneCircle near Orton, #Cumbria, UK, is one of the largest Neolithic/Early Bronze age stone circles in Cumbria. Comprising some 40 stones of mainly Shap Pink Granite arranged in an oval of approx. 42 x 35 metres. Quieter and more 'off the beaten track' than the famous Castlerigg circle.

Duddon Iron furnace (circa 1736 to 1867) is one of the best preserved charcoal fired blast furnaces in the country. It's also located in a (now) very picturesque location, near the River Duddon, Broughton-in-Furness, Cumbria, UK. #FerrousFriday #industrial #Archaeology

Looking over the granaries of the #Roman fort at Ambleside (possibly Galava), Cumbria, UK, towards the northern end of Windermere. Taken this week before the rain arrived. #RomanFortThursday

Corbridge, Northumberland, #Roman town with the modern (ish) town in the background. A fantastic site just to the south of #hadrianswall and both looking stunning in the spring sunshine. Romans, who laugh in the face of subsidence. 🤔 #RomanSiteSaturday #Archaeology

One of the four miracles of St. Kentigern (St Mungo). A salmon retrieves the lost wedding ring of the Queen of Cadzow from the River Clyde. Here depicted by the alter at Crosthwaite Church, Keswick, Cumbria. #MosaicMonday

This is the one stone thick, one horse wide ancient Packhorse bridge (no parapet to catch on panniers) at Capernwray, Lancashire, England. The river Keer winds its way under this bridge and the Victorian railway viaduct I'm standing under!

Sun going down over Morecambe bay and Cartmel, South #Cumbria, UK. Highlighting the Limestone pavement. Wind chill felt like -10C 🥶

The Coniston fells (#Cumbria) from #Morecambe (#Lancashire) today in a biting wind. 🥶

Here is a gate and a half! Many of the parts (helmet, sword etc.) commemorate the local English Civil war battle of Adwalton moor in 1643. Oakwell Hall #Elizabethan manor, Birstall, W. Yorks #AllMetalMonday

St Oswald's Church, Heavenfield, #Northumberland. Adjacent to Hadrian's wall and the site of the battle of Heavenfield, circa AD 644. The church contains a large #Roman altar. Looked stunning in the weekend (somewhat rare) sunshine. #HadriansWall 🏺

Just popped in to say hello to Cuthbert (Saint) and the Venerable Bede #Durham 🏺

Try and get a nice architectural photo of #Hexham Abbey and the moon goes and photobombs you. 🙄

This 60m earthwork circle popped up on LiDAR in Northern England (Full location currently withheld). It is under the 18th & 19th century field enclosures so is 'old'. Settlement? Cattle enclosure? Henge? Reported to the nice local heritage people (HER) 4 x 3D #LiDAR images. 🏺
