This sounds like a brilliant idea. The problem of AI deepfakes is only going to get worse and worse as the tools get better and better. Why can't Britain be doing innovative stuff like this, instead of trying to pass laws that would make it much easier for AI to train on copyright material?

Looks like we will be treated to the shoddy spectacle next week of rebellious Labour MPs being bought off, and voting in favour of hurting vulnerable people and people with disabilities because only new claimants will be hurt. That's still not ok. How can you have a 2-tier regime for disability?!

I don't want to hear "we can't afford it" one more time from Labour. Not while they continue to reinforce their Brexit red lines. The amount of money being left on the table by not seeking to rejoin the EU is eye-watering. The tax lost to Brexit would have paid for everything Labour needed.

"I’ve been voting Labour for as long as I can remember. For the last few elections (at least three) I have had misgivings about their manifestos and leaders, but... I have voted Labour... I’ve recently written to my MP to say that this is no longer the case, and I want to explain why."

"Much has been said and written about Fighter Command in 1940. Yet the sacrifice of 2 Group of Bomber Command was also the stuff of which legends are made and the scale of their losses far exceeded those of the...[Fighter]...pilots. It was their tragedy that few of them were left to tell of it." 1/2

We've just finished recording out 4th episode for series 3. Remember to save the date, folks!

To be expected: ✅ James holds up a model kit to show listeners before realising it's an audio podcast ✅ Jane mentions minelaying and/or 10 Squadron ✅ Halifaxes and Blenheims a plenty ✅ Great guests and insights into one of history's most fascinating topics

It will never not annoy me that the Short bomber is the longest.

I know I’m getting increasingly bolshie in my increasingly cranky old age, but I was thinking while reading the article that the proposed 1-2% wealth tax isn’t nearly enough. We shouldn’t be debating whether we can have crumbs from their table. We should be bringing them down to size.

Daddy...? Daddy?? Try Grandad who shits himself and rambles on about racist bullshit.

No10 has issued odd internal guidance banning officials speaking at public events It means more closed govt & worse policy decisions-the opposite of what ministers say they want From @drhannahwhite.bsky.social & me @instituteforgovernment.org.uk www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/comment/gove...

“It takes a lot to pull one over on New Yorkers, and when we looked around, the city described in Cuomo attack ads simply did not exist. We recognize that the city’s problems come mostly from the people above, and not the ones sitting next to us on the subway.”

Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security.    Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.   Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people. —Harry Truman, 1952

Plenty still scoff at idea of an AOC run. But the Mamdani success should remind us how formidable a candidate she will be in the Dem 28 primary. And she'd be formidable in the general too. Because like Trump, she is one of the few politicians to truly grasp the media age we're living in.

People in wheelchairs are getting arrested right now in the Russell Senate Office Building in DC. They showed up to tell Congress not to cut their Medicaid, because they cant afford health care without it. If you look closely you can see the zip ties on their hands. #WeWontGetOverLosingMedicaid

Starmer is going head to head with the King over Trump’s visit, The Times reveals. Charles wanted a low-key meet in Scotland, because of concerns over threats to Canada. Starmer has instead opted for a full pomp and ceremony State visit in London in a bid to curry favour with Trump.

As a model for dealing with backbench revolts this is a pretty good case study in how not to do it.

A lot of people will be saved by inheritance but in an entirely abitrary way - (both because none of us control what our parents earned but also because large social care costs will hit some but not others).

The split discussed in this piece between those in seats facing Reform + those facing progressive opponents was an inevitable function of the election result. This was from my post the day after the election.

New post just out: "History Restarted: the radical right and the problem of "successful" autocracies." In which I look at the growing threat to liberal democracy from a new strain of capitalist authoritarian governments. (£/free trial) open.substack.com/pub/samf/p/h...

For disabled people in East Lindsey, there aren't enough of the right kind of jobs. And there certainly isn't any transport to get people to work in towns where more jobs are available. PIP cuts won't solve that. Better buses will help, but they're not a panacea. 1/

EXC - No10 is set to offer concessions to Labour rebels on welfare. Talks are ongoing but changes could be made to Pip reforms. A number of cabinet ministers are now said to believe the bill has no chance of passing in its current form With @kiranstacey.bsky.social @pippacrerar.bsky.social

Great piece from Ms. Marcotte, who's been one of the most consistently insightful journalists of the last decade.

A hilarious read of what a pipe-dream Brexit was for some. It's pretty much 100% wrong. It'll take you 5-10 minutes to read. But read it, just to get a sense of the delusion the Brexit campaign was living in.

Here's your periodic reminder that political centrism is nonsense. There is no middle ground between democracy and oligarchy.

Weds 25 June. Good morning on Day 1218 of this damn war. Ukraine continues to be battered, Ukrainian civilians continue to do. All because of a sick dictator and too many "good" people doing nothing. The NATO summit continues - we are left hoping for miracles. Here's the 🧵

NEW STUDY: A new study “confirms what many riders already know—cycling to work makes you healthier, more productive, and even reduces sick days.” “The most active cyclists chalked up 531 fewer sick days per 100 person-years compared to non-cyclists.” Via @momentummag.bsky.social

There is ‘risk’ that welfare cuts could cost lives www.channel4.com/news/there-i...

Keir Starmer vows to press on with welfare cuts as rebellion grows. Wrong. Listen to the poor, sick, disabled; your backbenchers. Govt can cut corporate welfare, tax the rich. HMRC didn't collect £46.8bn of taxes last yr. We are all one illness/accident away from needing benefits Oppose the cuts

Lads I have met Ozymandias and I was so awestruck I forgot to get a photo but. I need you all to know he is TINY. like maybe the length of my forearm. Maybe. And ninety percent fluff I will be riding this high for the rest of the year

Labour whips are now ringing round rebels on the benefit reform bill to tell them it’s a confidence vote on Starmer. Which may not go as well as they hope.
