One mystery of Keir Starmer is: why is a man who does things like this, who writes handwritten notes to people he worked with but didn't know well, or for people he met briefly in the CPS, quite *SO* bad at talking to and cultivating MPs?

"If there’s one family that hasn’t profited off politics, it’s the Trump family,” Eric Trump said. on.ft.com/3I2Queo

Many of the people around Clegg during the Coalition were politically inept and often lacked social empathy. They had a vacuous understanding of politics and disliked the progressive traditions of the party they were meant to be championing. In that sense they had a lot in common with Team Starmer.

🔴 Reform UK’s Darren Grimes Seems to Have Forgotten Something on his Register of Interest – and He’s Not the Only One The former GB News host is among a series of newly-elected Reform councillors who appear to have left basic information off of their disclosures bylinetimes.com/2025/06/27/r...

*This* is why they are freaking out about Zohran Mamdani.

A tribute to Lord Hannan: “For Dan’s unique ability is to be wrong about almost everything, all the time. Failing is his niche talent and his fans applaud his every disaster. For Dan has long since been rewarded for being the dimmest man alive with a peerage” www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

For those with a hangover from yesterday's Hannan Day celebrations. Good Morning.

“The date that Daniel Hannan chose for his now infamous Newsnight video and Reaction Life article, published two days before voters went to the polls in the 2016 referendum, has finally arrived. Yes, it’s 24 June 2025” Anyone else remember this exercise in purest Brexit fantasy? 🌈🦄

How to win friends (not). "One MP was told their next election campaign would be defunded unless they fell into line. Another had it relayed they would be deselected and their parliamentary future would be over. Others were warned they could be ousted as chairs or members of select committees."

This sounds like a brilliant idea. The problem of AI deepfakes is only going to get worse and worse as the tools get better and better. Why can't Britain be doing innovative stuff like this, instead of trying to pass laws that would make it much easier for AI to train on copyright material?

Looks like we will be treated to the shoddy spectacle next week of rebellious Labour MPs being bought off, and voting in favour of hurting vulnerable people and people with disabilities because only new claimants will be hurt. That's still not ok. How can you have a 2-tier regime for disability?!

I don't want to hear "we can't afford it" one more time from Labour. Not while they continue to reinforce their Brexit red lines. The amount of money being left on the table by not seeking to rejoin the EU is eye-watering. The tax lost to Brexit would have paid for everything Labour needed.

"I’ve been voting Labour for as long as I can remember. For the last few elections (at least three) I have had misgivings about their manifestos and leaders, but... I have voted Labour... I’ve recently written to my MP to say that this is no longer the case, and I want to explain why."

"Much has been said and written about Fighter Command in 1940. Yet the sacrifice of 2 Group of Bomber Command was also the stuff of which legends are made and the scale of their losses far exceeded those of the...[Fighter]...pilots. It was their tragedy that few of them were left to tell of it." 1/2

We've just finished recording out 4th episode for series 3. Remember to save the date, folks!

To be expected: ✅ James holds up a model kit to show listeners before realising it's an audio podcast ✅ Jane mentions minelaying and/or 10 Squadron ✅ Halifaxes and Blenheims a plenty ✅ Great guests and insights into one of history's most fascinating topics

It will never not annoy me that the Short bomber is the longest.

I know I’m getting increasingly bolshie in my increasingly cranky old age, but I was thinking while reading the article that the proposed 1-2% wealth tax isn’t nearly enough. We shouldn’t be debating whether we can have crumbs from their table. We should be bringing them down to size.

Plenty still scoff at idea of an AOC run. But the Mamdani success should remind us how formidable a candidate she will be in the Dem 28 primary. And she'd be formidable in the general too. Because like Trump, she is one of the few politicians to truly grasp the media age we're living in.

People in wheelchairs are getting arrested right now in the Russell Senate Office Building in DC. They showed up to tell Congress not to cut their Medicaid, because they cant afford health care without it. If you look closely you can see the zip ties on their hands. #WeWontGetOverLosingMedicaid

Starmer is going head to head with the King over Trump’s visit, The Times reveals. Charles wanted a low-key meet in Scotland, because of concerns over threats to Canada. Starmer has instead opted for a full pomp and ceremony State visit in London in a bid to curry favour with Trump.

As a model for dealing with backbench revolts this is a pretty good case study in how not to do it.

A lot of people will be saved by inheritance but in an entirely abitrary way - (both because none of us control what our parents earned but also because large social care costs will hit some but not others).

The split discussed in this piece between those in seats facing Reform + those facing progressive opponents was an inevitable function of the election result. This was from my post the day after the election.

For disabled people in East Lindsey, there aren't enough of the right kind of jobs. And there certainly isn't any transport to get people to work in towns where more jobs are available. PIP cuts won't solve that. Better buses will help, but they're not a panacea. 1/
