I freelance for a few hospitality titles. I recently negotiated a rise in the word rate with one of them after many years. They agreed the increase and then a month later cut their standard article length from 1500 to 1000 words.

Thankfully I was on a flat fee from Financial Times Retail Press. The royalties wouldn’t have been up to much. You can still look me up in the British Library though.

All excellent questions, Matt. As far as I know this is the first year that the final judging panel will know the contenders in advance of assembling. It's in everyone's interest for the process to be transparent and robust.

Clearly @camraofficial.bsky.social are doing things a bit differently this year, so the final panel will know the shortlist. But in my experience judges go into the process determined to be as objective as they can.

Having judged Champion Beer of Britain quite a few time, in previous year the "semis" - i.e. the panels judging multiple examples of different styles - have taken place on the same day as the final judging, so the final judging panel would have no advance knowledge of which beers made the final cut

Just for the record, I was on the IPA judging panel that put Oregon Trail though yesterday, and I think I'm experienced and professional enough to stay objective, even with @tabamatu.bsky.social sitting on the next table judging milds...
