If you want the full context for this particular series, watch the movie trilogy version of the original Gundam series! This new one is an alternate version of the original timeline, and although it's not required to understand the show, it does help a lot!

If you want some good entry points into the franchise besides the original series, I'd recommend something like Gundam 00 or Gundam: Witch from Mercury! Those are set in their own timelines and have no connection to the main timeline
