David Ashworth, one of 10 survivors of the General Grant, a ship that wrecked off the Auckland Islands in 1866. The survivors were shipwrecked for 18 months on a deserted island until rescue. Ashworth later drowned trying to retrieve gold from the wreck of the General Grant. Ref O.005270, Te Papa.

Nguru (nose flute) carved in the Nga Puhi style, 18th century? It has an upturned snout end, into which the player exhales through one nostril, and two perforated holes (wenewene), along the length of the stem, which produce low, sobbing notes when played at funerals. Ref ME023146, Te Papa.
