That's actually relatively LOW compared to some I've seen. The generic brand charging cables went from $10 to $17. Laundry detergent got "clearanced out" at 15% off and then replaced with a bottle with 30% less than the original for the same price.

It's already happened at Target and probably a lot of other places They've rolled out probably 1,000 price changes over the past month and "shrinkflated" a lot of the products that stayed the same price.

I've seen more and more left-wing arguments using this logic. People have decided that if their opponents are going to use unethical or deceptive tactics, then there's no problem with them doing so. Which is a really, really ineffective way to convince people who don't already agree with you

I know someone who was hospitalized and almost died from COVID, twice, and still held tight to his anti-mask/anti-vax beliefs. I haven't fully given up on finding a way to get people to listen, but it's extremely easy to get discouraged

Tennessee voter here. We have virtually no local news or police/political transparency here, because it was deemed THOSE things would lower tourist revenue. Trying to get through the industrially thick skulls around here is extremely difficult.

"is being right the point?" Hits the nail on the head I think. Fact is, we're in a BAD spot, and if we want to get out of it we're likely going to have to make some compromises and put off some battles for later. What matters right now is just getting people to recognize and wake up to the danger

I completely get that point of view as well. I'm deconstructed now, but I grew up as an uber-conservative Christian homeschooler. Haven't been involved in that world since pre-Trump, but it's very easy for me to understand how people can get trapped there and how bad things can get in those circles

(2/2) if the only path to redemption in our eyes is to admit their entire life was wrong and decide all of their Red family and friends are evil and wrong, the cost of entry is too high for anyone to ever consider changing their mind. Why would you ever switch to a side that will always hate you?

Cognitive dissonance is a bitch fr, and I don't have all the answers. But asking someone to change their entire worldview in a heartbeat is unrealistic. If we genuinely want to swing people we have to find an actual middle ground and not permanently demonize them, as hard as that is (1/2)

I agree. But if they feel it deeply and still blame the wrong person, they learn nothing. I think the "FAFO, u deserve it" attitude is kind of cruel/naive at the same time. Echo chambers are very hard to break out of and usually require a postive outside presence that proves them wrong, not anger

As someone who lives in one of these states: the ignorance and sheer lack of information a lot of people base their decisions on is HIGH. If you don't point out exactly WHY these things are bad ideas and whose ideas they were, then they find a way to cry "democrat conspiracy" and don't change.

Bold of you to assume there's actual local newspapers in my part of TN. Everything is either barely veiled tourist ads or sponsored slop hyping up UT.

I wasn't successfully able to get it to let me make an account when I was connected from VPN, but if you figure out a trick to it let me know

VPNs don't work, I tested extensively. If your account was flagged as originating from the U.S. you're locked out no matter where you are or where you VPN to

The real trick is figuring out a way to get a non-US tiktok account in the first place. Even in a phone that I factory reset, connected only via VPN, and had no SIM card, I was unable to get it to let me create an account

If you CONTINUE to see nothing but dancing girls, yes. But if you're setting ANY social account up for the first time and it detects you as a US adult male, the thirst traps take a LOT of effort to escape from. The only way I got away is because the algorithm eventually decided I was trans lol

I went through even more steps with an old iPhone and tried re-setting it up in another region and VPNing to that region. I was able to download it from the app store but was unable to make a new account or log in with my previous ones. Guessing it either detected the VPN IP or some fancy geo-lock

Also might be worth checking with your phone company to see if they have any promotions or upgrades they're running, as sometimes the big contract carriers will offer you better deals on newer phones than you might be able to get by buying the phone outright.

The iPhone XR and XS are the oldest ones currently still receiving security updates. Looking at Amazon Renewed prices (refurbished phones w/ good return policy), an XR/XS is around $200 or an 11 is ~$220. I've had good experiences buying and returning from them in the past.

The other risk would be that, because of the unpatchable bug I mentioned, if someone wanted to straight up steal and resell your phone they could unlock it and do so. That's not really a big issue in your specific case though, since a used iPhone 6 only sells for around $50-60.

2: they could potentially get access to your contacts and try to scam your loved ones into thinking you were in a bad situation and needed financial help, then run off with the money.
The odds of being targeted for this kind of thing just because you have an older phone are LOW. But not zero

If you genuinely don't have any payment/banking info on there, the risks are definitely lower. The 2 main concerns would be -
1: Theoretically, hackers that found a loophole could access anything that normally requires a text or call to confirm/verify login, which can sometimes include banking

Some prepaid providers have trial sims that only cost a couple dollars to let you test out the coverage (Mint mobile uses T-mobile towers and has them for $2 at Target). Could be worth a shot to check if it's the provider as long as you're not already running off T-mobile towers

Props for not falling victim to the upgrade train, BUT the 6 *is* legitimately outdated enough to be a security risk. Anything older than the XR has an unpatchable security flaw in the processor that can let someone bypass the iCloud lock.Probably not too many people steal/hacking a 6 but still jsyk

Yeah the racing isn't my personal cup of tea, but there's really something on there for just about everyone nowadays, and with it having historically been one of the only free cross-platform non-MMO games out there it's become a go-to for me and some of my friend groups

My worst gaming take is that I played through the entirety of Windwaker without using the targeting mode because I felt like it was unnecessary. I had to google when I got to the final boss because apparently you physically cannot beat Ganon without it

My most controversial take is hating The Notebook. I do think it's tragic, but not tragically romantic. Him staying with her in the seniors home and continually traumatizing her out of hopes of "love" she couldn't remember was just blatantly selfish and crappy. He needed to move on and give her peace

There's apps for literally everything, and a phone is considered a necessity even for young kids. Most kids, if they have experience with computers at all, it's a school Chromebook which could be touchscreen itself. I had to teach kids to use a mouse when I taught classes and that was like 2018.

I agree with you that Plan B isn't a sustainable birth control solution in an ongoing relationship. That said, most people aren't stockpiling it to use in their everyday relationships. They're stockpiling in case of emergency i.e. sexual assault

I forgot Australia also uses $ s. That converts to $40 USD which is what my prices were in. If you're shopping in the future though, most phones max out at around 20-25W charging speed, most wireless chargers 5-15W. As long as it's in that range, you're good regardless of brand. Laptops are 60-150+W

You got ripped off with this one. I work in a big box electronics department and even Apple's USB-C adapters for phones only cost $20. The more expensive ones put out more power and are typically for beefy tablets or laptops, but not necessary for a phone.
