It shocks me that I'm saying this, but Luke Russert has a point.

In case you haven’t noticed, the election of even a single person who is considered leftist is so terrifying to capitalists that every weapon imaginable is on the table. This is why, post-WWII, America worked with Nazis, supported dictators, engaged in international terrorism and assassinations.

But but but Matt Yglesias said that’s wrong

More people should familiarize themself with the only good paper Dan Ariely wrote, “Zero as a Special Price” (don’t worry, this one actually replicates): people.duke.edu/~dandan/webf...

A Virginia guy hunted a Latino man, cornered him, questioned him, and then shot him and his friend, because he assumed the guy was an undocumented immigrant. He was radicalized by Fox News etc. and, of course, Trump. www.wric.com/news/local-n...

It's pretty wild how much of what Putin says publicly is precisely calculated pitches to the American far right. *PUTIN: CONCERNED ABOUT WORLD DRIFTING TO WORLD WAR 3

A poll with no undecideds is usually a low quality and/or low ethics pollsters. The Fox poll, tho, is a quality poll and their new one is 46% approve, 54% disapprove for Trump. So literally no one is undecided. Which frankly sounds about right but is still pretty amazing.

The media-created "should Smith run for president" stuff seems to be over, the legacy is that his random utterings are now Slopnews.

Great record of Newsom cannily trolling admin: “You don’t have to like Newsom to recognize that this trolling attempts the kind of messaging Democrats need to do more of. Indeed, his dickish personality and the long-standing bad blood with Trump may make this more effective” Hint: it’s Miller time.

Voyeurs and pervs cheer everywhere.

And by “athletes” and they mean “cops.”

Live Free and Die

If you think a retrograde bully and serial sex pest like Andrew Fuckup Cuomo is the best hope for the future of the Democratic Party, go ahead and load your pockets with stones and walk into the Hudson River.

Bluesky is getting to the point that it's useful to me in the way Twitter was useful: figuring out which journalists and authors you can ignore without missing anything important.

Why do so many feel like they've fallen behind? It's not because of immigrants, trans people, DEI, the “deep state,” or any other bogeyman trotted out by the GOP.  It's because big corporations and billionaires have rigged markets and siphoned off most of the economy's gains.

This is worrisome, ex-FBI agents likely command big salaries in private sector. They stay with the bureau (for less $) because they believe in their mission, that mission is changing for the worse. Look for the same exit wave from every national security institution, incl the military.

When you use up scarce law enforcement resources going after cooks and farmworkers, and put a bunch of unqualified lackeys in key leadership posts, can you possibly think you're making America safer?

It’s worth articulating why they’re afraid of Zohran or Lander being a good mayor - an outsider in city hall is a direct threat to the patronage and influence networks they’ve spent decades cultivating, and a direct threat to their power in the city.

People believe that the reason Dems aren't accomplishing their priorities is because leadership doesn't want to get things done, rather than the reality that the Dems don't accomplish their priorities because people don't elect enough Dems who agree with their priorities for them to do so!

Trump has made it possible for every immigration agent to dress up and pretend like they're Delta Force, and every customs agent at passport control to pretend like they're a CIA interrogator.

Purely from a business standpoint it’s hard to think of a dumber decision bsky.app/profile/wcp....

I was curious about the actual profitability of streaming and so I went so far as to dig into Disney's 2024 annual report. Looks like they did turn a slight profit -- less than a 1% profit margin -- on all streaming last year, after posting a loss in 2023. thewaltdisneycompany.com/app/uploads/...

I would argue that one reason Gen X is weird and libertarian now is because the Iraq War was such an obvious lie in the service of power and it happened even though literally everyone knew it

Incidentally (bc I'm thinking abt how Trump is badly losing political battle over his CA invasion even as 9th gave him legal sanction): I think deployment has made ICE goons more visible, nationally. The ICE goons are the ones doing spectacularly awful stuff, but think many may associate w/Guard.

A predictably good thread on yesterday's 9th C opinion (which cites @lizagoitein.bsky.social ).

No American outlet would hesitate to describe them as pro-regime paramilitaries or an irregular militia and similar terms if this was happening anywhere else.

Donald Trump is the most brilliant military strategist in our nation's history, but it's completely unfair to force him into a decision about Iran when he's in the midst of rolling out his new cell phone service. Another two weeks is more than reasonable. by Marc Thiessen

“‘Word got out that there were Homeland Security vehicles parked at the hotel. … People wanted to express their 1st Amendment rights and they did so in a lawful, nonviolent and respectful manner.’” apple.news/AjfQZ8rVTTxW...

This would have been a terrific moment in history for the United States of America to have a presidential administration with at least the tiniest bit of moral authority.

This is an example where the rhetoric of Democratic Party centrists is damaging the party’s image, but it won’t be reported as such.

Why do you think they're going after workers rather than gang members? It's obviously to avoid this.

if you don’t know the history of Dodger Stadium you can’t fully understand what unfolded today. thanks @chrislhayes.bsky.social for the opportunity to share it.

In my opinion, the best way we can contribute to our local communities, and in large the country we live in, is to get involved with protests, food banks, animal shelters, campaigning for politicians you believe in, and helping out the homeless we meet with food and drinks. Change starts locally.

FWIW. my GUESS is they're trying to slither out of a 4A complaint.

One of the lessons of Trump's "pause" on Iran is he is quite susceptible to pressure--whether from Tucker Carlson, Tucker's boss, Vlad, or even his own base. The Fox poll today REALLY pissed him off.

Cuomo and the rich assholes backing him are worried.

was in a bar monday night w friends that had wheel of fortune on the TV and I counted 12 anti-Zohran ads in about an hour. was basically the only ad running.

Juneteenth honors the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. If that offends you, it says more about you than it does about the holiday. Outrage at Juneteenth is itself an outrage.

Good.

New Yorker here. This is 100% a typical NYC subway ride. Yes, with the band of musicians, the dog, and everyone minding their own business.

To be really clear: The reason members of Congress can't just walk right in is because of the guns. Armed DHS personnel won't allow entry. In other words, DHS is using armed force to *break* laws. Democrats need to wrap their minds around that. Accept that the frog is boiled.
