Because of this complexity, the topic makes for a great classroom debate for med and GC students - we had such great discussions on everything from the science to the cost and the ethics. If anyone is interested in the teaching documents to organize this type of debate, please reach out.

But newborn genome sequencing is neither the “ethical minefield” referenced in the article or the obviously beneficial strategy some think it is, e.g. www.npr.org/sections/hea...

Yup, did so just a couple days ago at a retrospective talk about the last 20 years of the grad program in the context of the last 20 years of genetic science.

I first learned about Paisley's work at this incredible symposium organized by the NHGRI. Of course, all those outstanding talks have been removed from the website. irp.nih.gov/news-and-eve...

I initially thought this must be something related to limited funding for clubs at the state school level, but to see that this is happening at Harvard too shows it isn't that simple. "It’s just phenomenally hard to be young right now. There must be an easier way to grow up." 3/3

I also have learned that some of these exclusive clubs have plenty of funding from private sources (e.g. wealthy corporate sponsors) but choose to gatekeeper so that they can pay for the students to go on free luxury trips rather than opening the doors for more peers to gain these experiences. 2/3

Love this story! Honestly, did Auntie and Uncle have to listen to you lament turning down the first invite during the whole trip? 😂

Both red states and blue states are affected because universities and academic medical centers exist everywhere. We can't normalize this. This hurts all of us.

The NIH is a coalition of multiple institutes in specific areas of study. The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities has been hit the hardest. And this is only looking at grants, not at the people who work in those Institutes in DC.

There is particularly strong focus on the LGBTQ+ community and on studies that combat misinformation, decimating grant profiles in these areas. “You cannot eliminate a segment of the population by executive order, but you can harm them greatly.” -Tilghman

Terminated grant tally - targeting grants deemed "no longer in the interests of the agency" and widening knowledge and healthcare gaps for multiple minoritized communities.
