A strong connection with the DC legal community is very important as the programs it sponsors rely heavily on recruiting lawyers to participate in them. The dean does not have to have had prior law school teaching experience, but should be able to teach at least a seminar.

The person holding this position should have a long public service record, which should include work in the government as well as for a non-profit. Litigation experience, either civil or criminal, is a strong plus, but not required. Some work in the policy area would be helpful.
