The findings of the independent investigation into the financial challenges facing the University of Dundee have been published today. tinyurl.com/as43b4jh

Pushing my infant in the swings next to a couple of strangers and making new parent small talk including how they like singing to theirs: realising after they left that it was Jamie Cullum and Sophie Dahl

Tonight’s beer is a rhubarb sour Gose, made with some Sabro hop. Sabro is a Japanese strain of hop, with a coconut after taste- amazing! It complements the rhubarb very well, and the spice and salt in the Gose is awesome. If I ever went into business, this would be one to sell.

Dundee University has submitted its ÂŁ100 million request for financial support to government. See the details in full on @thecourier.co.uk www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/politics/...

What a time to be alive.

Depressing, attention-grabbing headline as ever, but this article from Philip Augar nails it. PS the Scottish system is also obviously struggling. The English higher education market is broken

Too hot.

Lucky sighting on my walk today

My latest obsession is smoking things (not in the way that would explain a lot about me). This salmon was cured with beetroot for 48 hours then cold-smoked with beech wood for 12. It’s ace

Got that Sunday night feeling.

Fruits of my labour. Merguez sausage sourdough sandwich and a pint of lager in the sun. Perfect.

There is a broad consensus that university finances are in a fragile and increasingly critical condition, and almost certain to deteriorate in many cases. But much less on how to change that beyond reactive crisis response, institution by institution.

Good article highlighting opportunities for UK science to attract talented people from the US, urging our govt to make entry easier.

New England IPA homebrew in the sun. Thick as soup. Can also recommend M&S Extra virgin olive oil truffle crisps. #lahdidah

Mrs Hall’s 1940 herb and spice cupboard is being criticised by upstarts. #AllCreatures

Watching old school All Creatures Great and Small. Herr Hitler and food and mouth are excellent distractions from the modern world.

Tomorrow there'll be a Westminster Hall debate on the financial crisis and the wave of job losses in Britain's universities. A ridiculous under-reaction to what might become one of the biggest stories in years, but worth it nonetheless I suppose. www.parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/...

The @financialtimes.com today reporting that the Office for Students is “working … with a small number of universities …to ensure students’ interests are protected.” I wonder if prospective recruits, students and their supporters might want to know which are under greatest financial pressure?

I listened to this in the Scottish Parliament. This must cause alarm across the HE sector - in short, Dundee executive and Court thought they were doing fine, but after “failures in terms of reporting at executive and court level” it suddenly became clear they were actually going bust. Wow

What a morning part 2. So glad winter is on the way out.

What a morning

Beautiful morning for a jog today before a long meeting to which I’ve become unaccustomed

Dundee was UK top for biological sciences in REF2014 and near-top in REF2021 with substantial Wellcome funding for buildings, whilst being a smallish non-specialist HEI in a small town. The current major pressures in the HE sector have tipped it over the financial edge. 👇

This surely can’t hold.

I'm only saying this because it's public and everyone can see what's happening, but with its replacement freeze this is like a quarter of all staff. Dundee hasn't got a hope of clinging on if more rescue doesn't come, and who'll lend to it now? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Morning run. Spring was nice when it lasted. 🥶

This (vegan) recipe is so nice. Like posh beans on toast www.bosh.tv/recipes/miso...

Sometimes when it seems the world is crashing around you, it helps to stop for a minute.

Something calming in tense times.

The most shameful day for the United States of America in any of our lifetimes.
