In city after city, police are the single biggest budget item. And I don’t mean like 2% when everything else is 1%. I mean like 40%. Police take priority over drug treatment, psych care, housing, etc etc etc. And now we are here.

This is no small thing, particularly for DC residents. As the story notes, much of our public space is federal property (beyond even home rule questions), and this is a sign of how easy they can unilaterally just shut it down.
