The only danger I’ve ever experienced in downtown Victoria is wealthy white transphobes. #yyj

Science baffled as Daniella levels increase 400% nationwide. Nation left in permanent state of infatuation.

Just be cautious if you ever find yourself slashing a tire (for legal reasons this is not recommended): Semi trucks have their tires inflated to 130psi or more which, when suddenly released, creates enough of a pressure wave to permanently damage hearing

You can also visit the George Clutesi exhibition at the Legacy Galleries at the same time. A Tseshaht First Nation member and survivor of Alberni Residential School. The exhibition features art by Clutesi as well as pieces by contemporary Nuu-chah-nulth artists inspired by Clutesi’s work. #yyj

And then further, it would require them to think that it’s a bad thing. Which will never happen

Temporarily or permanently? Because Victoria has a pretty balmy climate

It truly is bogus. The whole area was not thought out far enough. There’s at least a dozen places within a block of there that could use improvement

Really interesting to spend millions to create a wider, higher-capacity network of multi-use pathways, and then also create a narrow choke point on the busiest segment of the goose

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the population of folks who access services on pandora but do not stay in the neighbourhood also includes folks I’ve met who live in James Bay, Royal Oak, Saanich, Fairfield, and Fernwood, but we aren’t putting much of any resources in those places.

As @kguiry.bsky.social mentioned, placemaking would go a long way toward speed self-regulation. Creating a sense of place will increase pedestrian presence, and hopefully bikes would slow down when approaching a crowd of people as perceived risk goes up.

I don’t know exactly what that looks like, as we have to consider all users. But chicanes, gentle bumps, and occasional narrowing/splitting of the trail may be viable. I trust physics more than the goodwill of strangers.

I’ve unfortunately seen many illegally modified e-bikes travelling WELL above 32 km/h on the goose.
I think rather than investing in signage/enforcement, we need to do what we do on roads: make it impossible to feel comfortable riding the trails at 35km/h. Engineering controls are always superior.

Also this incredible claim that Victoria is becoming an uglier version of Toronto?? What a thing to say!

Oh my god don’t get me started on the traffic circles. When I cycle along Gladstone where it meets Stanley, I’m almost killed every time by some goofball driving right through without even slowing down

I live on chambers street. They closed one end where it meets pandora and they closed the other end where it meets Bay. And yet somehow there’s still rat runners. Dozens if not hundreds per day. They just have to take a few extra corners now. But they go by my house at 50-60 in a 30 zone.

This reads more like the lashing out of someone who is lonely and confused and angry, who doesn’t have community in which to sit and discuss ideas so they must publish them in the paper instead. The editor of this paper seems to just publish the least effective and most outlandish comments they can.

this opinion piece doesn’t have any cohesive structure, jumps between ideas every sentence without making an actual argument, and uses the existence of a downtown public plaza to justify keeping high speed limits in Fernwood?

I think you’ll find that the VPD position on any given subject usually runs counter to both common sense and official rules.

I live two blocks from there, and it does seem like I’m taking my life into my own hands when I cycle on or across Fernwood. It’s already such a placemaking place, this would just be the last step in improving safety and connectivity.

It doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch to make that intersection bus-only 24/7/365. Plenty of other ways to get around, Cook and Shelbourne are only a couple blocks away each way. Vic high has three other approaches for cars, and this would make the area safer for kids walking to school anyhow.
