The reason you're having trouble concentrating if you are here in the US is because we're basically being chased around by serial killers and being asked to disregard the fact.

There are a lot of bad things happening all at once, and it’s overwhelming to think about how to meet moments like this. Jean says to focus on 1 or 2 things that you care about, understand fairly well, and are either local or involve a topic where you’re likely to have influence and find community

I’m afraid that if I keep looking at the news it’s going kill me but I'm afraid that if I stop looking at the news I’m going to die.

everyone: wow being a librarian is so cool you just get to read books all day your local librarian: today I had to break up a knife fight in the encyclopedia section

Sick and tired (Disclaimer: trans is at the head for a reason, but all else is random. Getting distracted by what should go where is exactly the petty distraction they want.)

“The existence of our nation depends on conscious, sincere citizenship. A republic cannot be sustained if dedication to it is cringe. Neither can it survive if awareness of its peril is limited to political hobbyists.” open.substack.com/pub/sincerec...

I know this sounds weak, I know it. But kindness is one of the few things we carry that can make a difference for each other. We can’t undo all this hate, but we can still make life a little easier for others.

This Speaker vote should remind all of us that literally nothing Republicans try to do will be easy, or a foregone conclusion. And often, they are going to have to come to Democrats to enact anything at all. We have lost power but we are not powerless.

I count, this first day of another year, what remains. —Jane Hirshfield

you have to read books or were not gonna make it

Billionnaires stole your living. Not immigrants. Not minorities. Not people who follow a different religion. Billionnaires. Noone needs a billion to live. Billionnaires could easily give you the money you lack and not notice the loss. They do not. They never will.

Two stages of writing: 1) This shouldn't take too long 2) Oh no

despite the world becoming scary i still have a perhaps niave but unwaivering belief that a better world is possible

Seeing this in the grocery store checkout line with the tabloids feels a little on the nose

I have faced fascism before, in this very country. I was one of 120,000 Japanese Americans summarily rounded up and expelled from our homes at gunpoint, all for the crime of looking like the people who bombed Pearl Harbor. I spent my childhood behind barbed wire. My parents lost everything. 1/

One of fascism's main tactics is to physically and mentally exhaust you. To flood the zone with outrageous bullshit, to make you bite on a dozen pump-fakes — so that when the real shot comes, you're too worn out to react. We need to pace ourselves. It's only been a week. Alert fatigue is dangerous

your cynicism is being Weaponized to demotivate you from attempting any kind of change. It is being used as a method to get large sections of the population to give up in advance. Cynicism is poison.

I retreated into lurkdom on social media to pursue virtuous brevity and info sec anonymity: only speak when there is something worth saying. One week active on this platform and my primal brain hungers. *Give me the likes*, it hisses, *number go up make feel good. d o p a m i n e*

I shamble from room to room, back and hip muscles so taut that my gait is that of Frankenstein's Constipated Monster. After days of heat and massage therapy, I spasm, lean against a counter, and skeet "self care is so punk rock"

Imagine an issue. Wrong, it's more complicated than that

Folks there are 30 states having local elections next year. Not 2026. Oklahoma has local primaries on February 11th! Want to take back our democracy? RUN!!!!

I wrote about this terrible week, dark times ahead, and how we can best oppose fascists by doing all the many things fascists can't. www.the-reframe.com/fighting-in-...

You know it doesn't necessarily have to "get worse before it gets better." That's just some shit people told you often enough and long enought that you uncritically took it for true. We could just work to be better.

I hope this isn’t too obnoxious but something I beg of us all is to not let Bluesky become what Twitter became. I say this to myself too, because I haven’t always done so: don’t engage, don’t dunk, don’t mute, just block and live your life. When you ignore these people, they eat each other alive.

I wrote a piece about what I'm seeing, what I'm worried about, and the emotional space we need to make for ourselves and others right now.

This is not going to be a repeat of 2016-2020. It will be better, it will be worse, but most of all it will be *different.* Here are things I want every single person to keep in mind as we head into round 2 of a Trump admin. 🧵

just gonna share this from James Baldwin because it's precisely WHY people share poems

Compassion is not cringe.

Some public libraries have seeds in their collection. You "borrow" a seed, plant it, harvest it, and "return" the harvested seed to the library. See also: plant swaps, seed swaps, gardening classes/clubs/books at the library and other community centers & organizations.

I am seeing more and more opinions bubbling up about how throwing trans people to the wolves would be a winning strategy for Democrats, and I just want to quickly say: Fuck off with that absolute dog shit.

we do not know this because it hasn't happened yet. we don't shouldn't give up ground we don't have to by accepting our worst fears as truth. insist that we have elections because this is a democratic society while acknowledging the GOP will try to do everything in their power to make this difficult

Would advise you expand this to any trolls. Trolling knows know ideology. It's just the desire to make somebody else feel bad.
