my first Half-Life 2 map from 2004 "Nakagin_DM", released just a few months after HL2 was released. I spent that entire summer locked in my room trying to recreate a chunk of Tokyo in Hammer it featured a subway train, randomized street traffic, and "animated video billboards" on the buildings

thinking about sprite generation (or authoring!) and data. i think a few different formats of sprite could be very harmonious with this rendering technique. first, you could have traditional flat sprites with baked depth. they'd composite well.
