It was originally pitched as a spinoff of an existing Forgotten Realms novel, using a ranger character and their non-magical animal companion from that series. But TSR editorial decided they wanted it set in a different part of the Realms, so he came up with the “good drow” idea as a replacement

Keep in mind that Wulfgar was the original intended main character of the series, and that Drizzt was literally created off the top of Salvatore’s head to be his mentor. So the plot was much more “barbarian” in the Conan mold when conceived
