the lefty solutions to a lot of the outputs (e.g., house the homeless) are both empathetic and correct, but a ton of people get bogged down with borderline conspiratorial thinking when it comes to what's driving the issue

Agreed. Democratic party needs to change lots of things. Policies aren't one them. Iglesias argues Dems should make themselves look even more craven and cowardly than they already do. "Study public opinion accurately." No one in the centrist-verse can believe Americans are as moderate as they are.

It also assumes that Democrats lose elections because Democratic positions are unpopular. Republicans win by making elections about everything but political positions. When WaPo asked voters which political platform they'd support, without saying whose platforms they were, Harris' won bigly.

no amount of substantive moderation will help you if you seem like a weenie and, vice versa, someone who codes as independent can get away with a few out-of-the-mainstream positions because they *reinforce the idea that you're independent and not beholden to anyone*

successful candidates cannot be too far afield of public opinion but it is actually more important than they demonstrate a strong sense of independence and self-possession. poll-testing selects for people who CANNOT DO THIS

trump is instructive: his perceived moderation from swing voters is as much or more about affect and perceived independence as it is specific positions.
