There's an important distinction between Americans, and the American GOVERNMENT. I have for a long time detested the US government under every president for myriad reasons, but only recently soured on Americans overall.
Of course, recognizing there's a strong, admirable minority I deeply respect.

But he’s a member of the DSA. Like, irrespective of his policies (which are not remotely socialist) he’s still a democratic socialist.
That’s fine - democratic socialists are entirely reasonable, and the real Overton window shift is the being a democratic socialist is terrible now

What? As someone who agrees with his policies, he’s a socialist. Democratic socialism is a flavour of socialism.
It’s calling a Labrador a canine.

A man just proposed to a woman in front of an LAPD skirmish line here at the protests in Los Angeles. She said yes.

Bears mentioning in all of this I’m still seeing some kids, folks in wheelchairs and the like here in downtown Los Angeles during the protests.
It’s an extremely chaotic and dangerous scene here.

What an incredible job the city and the NCC did on this. An absolute gem, and done for summer.

Small correction, the government didn’t lie. They have paused new export permits, but conveniently left existing permits in place.
They just didn’t correct anyone when people started saying it was a full pause.

Don’t worry, the US has that covered already with The Hague Invasion Act.

“The War on Cars” has existed far longer than the term “ban cars”. The idea that people against urbanism need literally any excuse is not backed up by fact.
comment in response to
post
This is very much a North American slogan, it seems - it’s rooted in a worldview that can’t imagine what it would look like to have only SOME cars, coupled with a very real desire to remove cars entirely from some specific places where it makes sense
comment in response to
post
I don’t think it’s fair to claim people who say “ban cars” in urbanist spaces are focused on that as their overarching goal. It’s a North Star - imagining a city where cars aren’t everywhere. They then learn about and support policies and projects that support that idea.

Centre-left gradualism was the dominant ideology for decades in North America following world war 2, and we live in the world its failures created.
Incremental change works in come cases, (i.e. city design) but it has proven inadequate to the task overall. The right has realized this.
