Oh, no no no! I take far more than 2 hours. I hear the language in my head. I highlight passages I love, or think are important, and annotate with things the passages remind me of. I'm in deep conversation with the book. And I can even do this WHILE drinking coffee.

An author I admire is guest editor for a magazine where I submitted a story. I got a polite rejection, but it's signed by that author, meaning he actually read one of my stories! I'm printing out that rejection, folding it up, and sticking it in my copy of his first novel. Improvement motivation.

I get into my apartment building's elevator. (There are some corporate rental units in the building.) Give the man in there a smile and nod. I'm pretty face-blind. A woman gets in. Her eyes go wide. "Oh! Hello, Mr. Malkovich!" I give him another smile, as though I knew but was being cool about it.
