Evolution of endothermy in marine fishes is related to competition with cetaceans. This incredible paper is a masterpiece of phylogenetic comparative methods and a future classic for marine biologists www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

I'll be documenting the sleeping position of Daisy from now on.

I'm pushing for a "bring your cat to work" day while this is at the museum.

Check out these cool Molidae larvae found while sorting plankton samples. One of the weirdest fish larvae you'll ever see, and that's saying a lot! youtu.be/V91nCb551bU?...

If anyone has a Krispy Kreme nearby, please investigate and report back here with your review.

Tomorrow night's discussion takes place at @nhm.org's NHM Commons Theater, followed by a cocktail reception. Save your spot today!

About to do another zooplankton sorting stream on Twitch. Lots of larval Molidae in this sample! Come have a look! www.twitch.tv/realfishdoc

As a kid, I remember watching a show about a detective who solved cases from his wheelchair, and today I learned that show started with a Raymond Burr made-for-tv movie from 1968 called Ironside, which led to an 8-season tv show. Anyway, today I watched Ironside.

What a cool fish with neat larval characteristics. Kinda like a cross between an adult pearlfish and a larval cusk eel.

Dirty kitchen.

Aphyonus gelatinosus — This deep-sea fish was only photographed alive for the first time in 2016. It’s essentially a living blob: transparent, scaleless, and nearly boneless. An extreme minimalist in the art of survival. #marinelife

Coelacanths having a great week! First a new live sighting of the Indonesian species, and now this fantastic work on their musculature by Aléssio Datovo and the late Dave Johnson

This week being what it was… watching this to cap off Friday night.

As the school year comes to a close I always try to get the whole lab together before students leave for summer. Super grateful for this group of hard working employees and students that truly represent the positive impact that federal funds can have on lives and careers. I can't thank them enough!

Stumbled across our Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri, in the collections earlier today. Look at that weird pelvic fin!
