The “had I stayed in LA, I could have been…” list keeps expanding, with the worst item getting worse.

Even if MAGA isn’t in power 3+ years from now, there is almost no way we’ll ever get back anything like NSF. The country will be so gutted and the necessary rebuild so extensive and expensive that it just won’t be a priority. And after a generation, it will be forgotten.

“ICE agents have to wear masks and no uniform because they have become so deeply unpopular that it’s safer to appear to be a vigilante kidnapper” is a hell of an argument

I left #LosAngeles a bit too early to join you, but thank you all for speaking out! #NoKings apnews.com/article/no-k... demonstrators crowd streets, parks and plazas across the US. Organizers say millions came

Not exactly “a” character, but almost.

@rexjiang.bsky.social & Pennel investigate how differences in mutational architecture shape evolutionary outcomes. Simulations show pleiotropy can constrain within-population variance, divergence, and adaptation rates, even when M-matrices are identical. doi.org/10.1093/gbe/... #genome #mutation

The near future seems bleak also to postdocs who aren't even eligible for NSF PRFB, like me.

Turns out I have to fly to Tokyo to apply for Spain visa before I can attend @eseb2025.bsky.social …🥲 This is when I can’t help resenting my nationality 😔

A few days after June 4, we are seeing American versions of the ‘tank man’ scene…

In response to US becoming hostile to international students, @oistedu.bsky.social is having a special application deadline for students admitted to US PhD programs. Glad to see OIST taking effort attracting talents that US is losing. www.oist.jp/admissions/s...

I’m one of the many who have chosen to do so👇

Now online at @genomebiolevol.bsky.social 🎉 ! academic.oup.com/gbe/advance-...

Harvard isn’t going to be the only target, is it?

I’m excited to announce that this manuscript is just accepted at @genomebiolevol.bsky.social. A lot of thanks to the editorial office for their support throughout this! Can’t wait to see the formal version!

Finally got time to look into this cool work. The overall pattern that convergent expression evolution among divergent lineages is limited to a rather small set of genes appears similar to what I found in a different case (of independently evolved monogamy). www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1...

This is the first observation I uploaded to @inaturalist.bsky.social. Got a couple identifications as Okinawa Sword-tailed Newt (Cynops ensicauda popei).

A model for distinguishing between adaptive and non-adaptive explanations for multiple isoforms of a gene ➡️ www.embopress.org/doi/full/10....

『令和何年になったらこの国で 夫婦別姓OKされるんだろう』(How many years into the Reiwa era could a married couple have different surnames in this state?) Very glad hear a Japanese celebrity say this loud & clear. To fight sexist social norms, we must stop taking them as granted. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qjn...

$500 million is… less than 1.25% of the NIH’s 2024 budget. When I say there is no capacity to absorb the shock, I mean it.

Loud enough to wake me up. What a Golden Week…

This is about all of us. Never forget that.

Make sure you check out the alt text for the whole awesome story 🦖

A gecko, likely Hemidactylus, shedding its old skin. #Okinawa #gecko

Encountered this newt, presumably a sword-tail newt (Cynops ensicauda), right in front of our building this morning. Rather unexpected given it appeared far from water bodies. It supposedly went out there due to the rainy weather. #Okinawa #newt #amphibian

A Chinese man raped his fiancee, and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment. Many Chinese people are surprised that this counts as raping. This is the kind of undereducated patriarchal population GOP is looking forward to, isn't it?

Congrats to Janis!

It could have been me had I chosen to stay in US longer on my OPT. 😣

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.
