This is the aspect being largely ignored in the rush to mock Trump’s humiliation: the awful humiliation of the US military. Trump has debased the army by dragging them into this sad political charade.

Do you think those things have ever existed in the US on a national scale? It seems to me the embers of the Civil War never went out and half the country has never wanted a federal government. Caring for ‘other Americans’ rarely extends beyond the neighborhood. Was the New Deal just an aberration?

One obvious answer: the corporate takeover of government and the attendant collapse of governance for the common good. In parallel, the corruption of media by corporate interests (Rupert et al) destroying a shared reality and supercharging tribal fragmentation.
