Scientists say 4 billion people, about half the world's population, experienced at least one extra month of extreme heat because of human-caused climate change from May 2024 to May 2025.

You want to cut PIP because “too many people qualify.” Ever wonder why? Maybe more people are disabled because more people are burned out, injured by austerity, stuck on waiting lists or living in systems that break us. The answer isn’t less support. It’s more care. #TakingThePIP

MPs are floating a “transition period” to soften the blow of PIP cuts—so claimants can move onto “other benefits.” That’s fantasy. PIP is to be the gateway. Lose it, and you lose access to nearly all other benefits. That’s the cliff’s edge. #TakingThePIP

How does cutting disability benefits like PIP help people into work? The government hasn't provided any evidence that it does. In fact, removing PIP may force some disabled people who are currently in employment to drop out of work entirely. Me on the Today programme this morning:

@mrjamesob.bsky.social this is the type of insurance based healthcare that Farage has suggested (for humans) in place of the NHS model. Imagine going through these traumatic decisions and costs for family members

“There was a 1,055% increase in unauthorised phone SIM swaps in the UK in 2024 – a practice which not only leads to people having their money stolen but also their identity”.

Removing the proposed 4 point PIP criteria would be a huge relief and genuinely save lives, but simply adding a longer transitional 'tail off' period would still leave tens of thousands of people who can't work in long term, severe poverty

"Water pollution is a massive problem. The River Ouse, a major river in Yorkshire, is identified as being at risk from manure pollution from factory farms. UK livestock farming produces an estimated 33,450 tonnes of manure every day."

This is a very positive step, but it won't help the tens of thousands of ill and disabled people who simply *can't work* and who will be pushed into unremitting, deep poverty by the cuts. Their care needs won't disappear, but their unpaid (family) carer will lose Carer's Allowance.

Every 0.1° matters... "The prospect of hundreds of millions of people trying to escape climate extremes, be it prolonged droughts, heat, coastal erosion and saline pollution or desertification, will be extremely difficult to manage internationally."

Just finished this beautiful, powerful, indelible read. It chronicles @gracespencegreen.bsky.social's journey from 22-year-old medical student to qualified doctor & disability activist after a man falls onto her in a shopping centre, breaking her spine. Out next week & it's superb.

People are unaware of high care costs, the cost of caring yourself, or long waiting lists. Most of us hope the social care system will be there for us in times of need. But the system we have currently is inadequate. Our latest analysis has found a ‘care expectation gap’ 🔽 1/4

South London Press has printed its last issue. Very sad, but not surprising. In later years it only survived thanks to its excellent sports coverage (ironically, in the last week Charlton and the Dons have been promoted and Palace have won the cup!). But many will remember it fondly, including me.

"And now there is another level of cruelty. The government’s plans to cut down millions of people’s entitlements to Personal Independence Payments will have knock-on effects for carers - depriving an estimated 150,000 people of either Carer’s Allowance or the carer element of Universal Credit."
