Quickly delivering accurate results in the form of outbound links means people spend less time on Google pages seeing ads that Google gets paid to display. So the perverse incentive is to provide a slower experience with worse results.

shout out to all the lonely people, who (unlike these 8) dealt with it by joining a book club or something, and didn’t commit any hate crimes or try to provoke confrontation with any law enforcement

I remember being deeply motivated by the dough metaphor back in the day, but in the inconvenient present there’s a painful irony that his signature is now hyping some ghastly “AI” rails app slapped together by three kids and an iguana just like everyone else.

remember Magic Cap, where the entire SDK was intended to build code snippets that would run on other systems, perform tasks like airline bookings, and then format messages to send back to the client

Volume license keys don’t work like that any more, at least for Windows. I don’t know about these people specifically (there are literally dozens of such vendors) but they’re usually an arbitrage business, moving licenses between national markets with different prices.

My absolute favourite thing about this entire class of bug is that the scripted loops for the NPCs never tests for conditions like “nightmarish mutant reindeer nearby”, so none of the NPCs ever switch modes and they remain perfectly calm despite the eldritch horror walking among them.
